I own a 991.2 and a Macan. I think that the Macan is the best long distance cruiser that I've ever owned. But if I'm by myself and space for stuff or other people isn't a factor, I take the 991 over the Macan 99 times out of a hundred. What it lacks (slightly) in long distance comfort compared to an SUV, it more than makes up for in the short bursts during which I get to open it up. I find it hard to believe that anyone who owns an SUV and a 911 would consider not driving the 991 whenever the opportunity for a road trip arises.

The X3 is a not a good long-distance GT cruiser. Around town as a people mover and task rabbit, it's perfect.

Go with the 911.

911 No question! Make excuses to drive your Porsche, not the otters way around. But of course make sure wife cool with it, or won't be fun anyway??? Seriously good luck and enjoy the trip, which ever way you decide. Sounds like a great trip, Asheville and Nashville are two of our favorite non beach, non flying vacation spots, living in Atlanta.

I do have the 14 way seats. I found the seats in the X3 are not as good, and that car has the M-sport package seats. My lower back is killing after 2.5 hours of driving. (in the x3)

Default 4 ways great to me

I love my 4 ways. The are great for long trips. did Florida to Asheville and felt great. Aging athlete 6'1 220 with crappy back to boot.

I have 14-ways, I’d imagine the 18s are even more comfortable... however I don’t think I could do it with 4 ways or buckets... I used to take the boxster up to WA and back with 4 ways but my back is too old now to go that long without good lumbar support.

OP - take the 911!! Funny thing, we have a 911 and X3. We usually take the 911 on long trips and heading up to Quebec City next week with it.

40K miles in 4.25 years on my 911, about of that long road trips. And, I have a cranky back. 911 is the best road trip car I've ever owned. Of course, it helps that my wife loves driving it as well, so we stop every couple of hours, chill, get coffee, etc. switch places. Repeat. Take the 911!

If you're using the car mainly to get from point A to point B, take the Bimmer. If you'll be "driving", then of course take the 911. However, if a spare tire is a significant concern the Bimmer is your only choice. Also, keep in mind, a happy wife = a happy life.

If luggage and weather are not a problem, take the 991. If you start taking it for more road trips, and still worry about flats, you can get one of these.

Details or a link to some threads on that? Would it work for a 997.2 gen 911?

911 for sure. Wouldnt be a question if it were me. I drive mine up to the lake virtually every weekend in the summer...about 2 hours. Bad back and always feel great when I get out. Only time I take SQ5 is if I've got too much stuff.

A Boxster Spare or 996 spare works for a 997, maybe a 991. You just have to clear the brake caliper. You're supposed to put the spare on the front wheel and move a front wheel to the rear (if the rear tire has the puncture). Then you have to put a rear wheel in the car since it won't fit in the frunk. So if you have a lot of stuff in the car, you need to make sure you can reload by putting some stuff in the frunk and have enough room for a dirty wheel and tire. The things we do for the things we love.....

Are there many 911s up in Muskoka? Would be concerned considering Pfaff is the closest dealership.

Here's my original thread on the spare tire. I do not know about the 997.2 (the "official" spare could be different).
