Default Spare Tire and Mounting

Where I live (SW Colorado), not only are dealers far away, some of the roads reach beyond cell phone coverage. And given my old school attitudes, I had to buy a spare for my new 991.2 before heading out.

First, the current spare is part number 991.362.050.00. This includes a collapsible tire on a 19" wheel, to fit over all brakes and suspension variations on 991.2, including Turbo models. The inflated diameter should be within a half inch of stock tire size. I paid $877 at Porsche Atlanta Perimeter.

Of course, the spare has to go in the car. While it would fit easily in the back seat area, I opted for mounting in the frunk. Unfortunately, this spare, even when collapsed, is too tall to stand vertically:

Here's the entire set up, in sequence. First I installed a frunk bottom liner:

I put together a tool kit, including a Porsche jack, in a handy bag I had in my garage:

The tool bag goes in first:

To hold the spare in place, I came up with a custom strap installation that requires no permanent mods. Here is a kit with a pair of 1" webbing straps and buckles (
Amazon Amazon

For the right side, I made up a strap with a keeper (webbing doubled through) and the female buckle, all about 26" long:

I inserted the end with the keeper into the slot on the rear frunk wall where the holder for the tire goop goes. The keeper flips sideways to keep the stap in place, but can be fished out:

With the tire goop holder back in place, the strap is secure:

The strap for the left side has the male buckle and another keeper, set for maximum length (about 40" long):

This goes into the hole on the frunk wall for the tool kit/lug lock holder:

Again, with the holder back in place, the strap is pretty well planted:

Now the spare goes in, inverted (this leaves some space for a soft bag or two). The strap secures the wheel in place:

Finally, since I can't stop myself, I installed a frunk lid liner:

Next up, a custom front license plate mount.

Thanks for posting this. I knew I could get a spare in my 997, but wasn't sure about the 991.2.

Very cool. So, I'll bet the original front or rear tire won't fit in the frunk.

Into the back seat with some kind of vinyl overwrap/bag to keep the seats clean? Think I saw that in the tool bag....

Yes, both front and rear tires fit easily in the back, flat on the folded seat backs (as shown here--the passenger seat has to be pretty fair forward and upright, tilted on the seat backs and up onto the window shelf, or upright on one rear seat and center console.

Very nice set up ... I just have my spare jammed in the frunk with towels around it ... the thing doesn't budge ... your way is obviously better. Thanks for the directions.

Btw I have it set up the same in my R8 as well ... towels are my friend ... damn I'm lazy.

No worries, AF. I did the towel (and soft luggage) thing on the drive home from Atlanta PEC. For the longer term, I wanted to see if I could come up with something that would be more effective and leave no trace when undone.

You did a beautiful job ... here are mine (the red one is the 991 which is pretty obvious and the black one is the R8)

Nice job. Very nice write-up.

In the unfortunate event you need to run the spare on a rear tire, I'd suggest you move the FRONT tire on the rear, and then put the spare on the front.

This advice comes from my old 993 days.

First, LexVan's suggestion above is spot on.

I bought a complete package of spare, jack and tools from a 996 for my 2013 991.1 with 19 " wheels from LA Dismantler. It cost < $500. It fit perfectly in my frunk without modifications. I did have to buy a 5 mm spacer to clear the brakes. I used LexVan's scheme above when mounting.

I now have a 2015 991.1 GTS with 20 " wheels. I cannot find a comporable spare for 20" wheels without consulting PCNA. They sell a package that costs around $1000 and only fits in the back seat.

Does anyone have a spare kit for a 991 GTS (or C4S) with 20" wheels that will fit into the frunk of a GTS?

freeman, the part number for the wheel and tire I bought is 991.362.050.00. Two different parts manangers confirmed this fits all 991 models, including big-T turbos.

Heys, may I ask if you ever installed this wheel on either the front or back?
The reason I am asking is I did a search on that part #, and found this link. If you click on Vehicle Fitment, for the 911, it says it only fits the 2012-2016 911 (is that basically the 991.1 only?)
https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...el-99136202000

I'm afraid to try if a manager says one thing but the documentation says another. So was wondering if anyone installed it on a 991.2?

Thanks

Works for 991.2. No Porsche space saver fits rear. A rear puncture involves a double change, moving front to rear. Spare must go on front.
