Default Road trip, which car do we take....

I know this forum will have some bias. I guess the question is which car do we take for a 1800 mile road trip. We going from Philly to Asheville NC then Nashville, TN and then back home. Any recommended stops along the way?

I guess the more important question is which car do we take? The choices are a BMW X3 or 991 C4. Its two of us, we don't pack heavy, we might buy some wine during some wine tours.

Fuel econ between the two cars is pretty close +/- 1mpg, so no advantage to either car.
X3 is probably more comfortable in terms of ride, The X has run flats and we can throw one of the snow tires in the back and have an emergency spare. I don't have a spare for the 991 (its also not on run flats) nor would I have space to likely carry one. (this one seems to be weighing heavy, at least in my wife's mind)

I am looking at some of the roads down there and they look really twisty and we know which car will be better there. I also know that johnny law in VA can be an angry bunch so I think the X3 would blend more then the 991 would. (a concern but I am planing to drive within 5% of posted speed limits)

I forgot that was there. I will leave out mentioning that this is the tail of the dragon and just tell my wife that we will take the scenic route.

Those Porsche seats get awfully hard after about a few hours ....I run regularly from Wash DC to High Point NC (5 hours) in both my Porsche and X4. I'm always glad when I take the X4 and cussing myself out for not getting 14-ways in the 991.

Be sure to do the roads with the waterfalls south of Asheville NC - some you can drive your car through...

Terrific sunsets at the Omni hotel in Asheville NC.....be sure to book in advance

The 991 is plenty comfortable. I wouldn't even think taking the X3 if the luggage compartment will fit your luggage and shopping bags.

Definitely 991, we took ours on a CA - WA and back road trip via 101 rather than I5 last summer and it was amazing. We overpacked a little bit so the back seats were pretty packed but it was so worth it!

I have 14-ways, I’d imagine the 18s are even more comfortable... however I don’t think I could do it with 4 ways or buckets... I used to take the boxster up to WA and back with 4 ways but my back is too old now to go that long without good lumbar support.

The 911 of course! Bias doesn't even enter into the equation, the 911 is the perfect road trip car.

At the end of your life, I don't think you're going to look back and think, "damn, I should have kept my 911 in the garage much more often!"

I would take the 911. Mine has been really comfortable on long trips, PDCC for a nice ride, nice Burmester or sports exhaust to listen to, and ACC for when the traffic gets heavier. Drove about 400 miles last weekend. Got roughly 30 mpg except for autocross where it dropped to 9 mpg for my six runs.

911 for sure. Right after we bought our 911 we did a 1500 mile road trip and loved it.

Can’t ship wine to PA.

After doing miami to philly in a lotus elise non-stop, I think the 991 would be downright comfortable.

Take the 991. I just completed a 1200 mile road trip in my 991.1 4GTS and it was VERY comfortable and a genuine GT. These cars are meant to be driven and are very safe..and FUN !
