Thanks. Another great looking drive. Assuming those are your videos, you are really getting around.

Do you know why it's closed? Annual thing, closing during the winter due to concerns over falling rock? Or road repairs?

The videos are all mine, I try to get out and about as much as possible during the weekdays - I avoid the weekends at all costs.

Did A quick Google search and found this article, it looks like storm king highway will be closed till at least the end of the month.

You should recognize this one - Route 97 just north of Port Jervis.

That stretch is so fun. I only saw a few cars the day I did it. I may have, very slightly and purely by accident, exceeded the posted speed limit. I will have to head up that way again soon. This weekend looks like a washout, but my car needs some rest anyway.

Wow - great post. That route looks great! I live in VT, but my son is in college down in eastern PA. Great road to drive when I go visit.

Thanks!

Pennsylvania Route 44 from Jersey Shore, PA to Coudersport, PA.

I’m going to give it a shot tomorrow.

As a loop you can start anywhere, but pick Durango. Go north on US 550 through Silverton and Ouray to Ridgway (81 miles), west on Hwy 62 to Placerville (24 miles), south on Hwy 145 past Telluride, through Ophir and Dolores to Cortez (85 miles), ad then east on US 160 past Mesa Verde National Park, through Mancos and Hesperus, and back to Durango (46 miles). Thats 235 miles total, with elevations ranging from 6000 to 11,000 ft.

Do it in a day or spend a long weekend. Besides driving, look for movie stars (Telluride), movie sets (Ridgway--the John Wayne version of True Grit), blue collar mining towns (Silverton), indian cliff ruins (Mesa Verde), and steam trains (Durango).
You are right. I drive those monthly (coming from Denver) and there are so many fantastic roads down there (with equally fantastic views), it's hard to narrow it down. Some others in Colorado are:

Hwy 114 from Gunnison to Saguache
Hwy 141 near Gateway, CO
Hwy 131 from Eagle to Steamboat

North Georgia has some great roads and I'm fortunate to be fairly close to them.

Burnt Mountain out of Jasper
Ft. Mountain out of Ellijay

The Suches Loop. And many of the roads around Suches including Richard B Russell Parkway. This screenshot shows the loop. My preferred way is to take 19, then Wolfs Pen Gap, onto 60. But 60 is awesome either direction.

Warwoman Road is also a great run. And then North up into Highlands, NC.

Getting to Route 44 from NJ is kind of boring but it was worth the experience. 44 is almost 70 miles long from Jersey Shore PA to Coudersport and most of it is uninhabited. There’s a few small towns along the way and some houses but for 50 miles of the road nobody was ever in front of me. I’d call it a high speed road with good to great road surface. There’s not many gas stations that sell quality gas out here so be prepared and not to many quality places to eat.

Obviously, I did it on a week day so no crowds at all but I’d imagine on weekend there’d be a lot more traffic as there’s lots of state parks along the route.

I also took a side trip off 44 up to Hymer View State park - probably a 7 or 8 mile narrow well paved road that leads to a scenic overlook where you can see people hang gliding.

It’s a long trip so i decided to stay out here overnight - you can do it in a day trip but it would be really long.

Tomorrow I’m going to head over to the Grand Canyon of PA and then down to route 125 which is an extremely challenging road ( Google Pennsylvania Route 125 ). It runs between Shamokin PA and Pine Grove

If you stop at Highlands you are missing the best part. Either way on 64 for mountain and waterfall country.

Find Bridal falls around Highlands which you can park under then further along 64 a bigger falls you can walk under. Just Google falls in the area.

Going the other way (east) on 64 are great mountain roads all the way to Cashiers and Brevard.
