Yeah, scale. Before buying my 991 I'd only been in a 70's 911, I've since scaled up myself but was hooked back then and it all worked out.
I was led to believe that the increased length a few years back was to allow a hybrid electric motor to be added into the flywheel. Urban myth?

Just an observation, but it seems to me that somewhere along my time here in the world (74 years) it has gone from a "that's not for me" world to a "you are an idiot for having that" world. Whether it is the model of the car, the type of exhaust system, the transmission, the color or just about anything else.... we had plenty of discussion about the attributes, value, or desirability of something but never to such a "nasty" or personal level as it seems to occur now more and more ... guess it just he way of the world .....

Actually, my friend called it something else I won't repeat here. Was pretty funny hearing it from him given that he's a...996 Turbo owner. Said he couldn't get over how humongous and heavy 991s are. I challenged his notion on the weight—stating a 991.2 Carrera, even with its twin-turbo flat six, is far lighter than his 996 Turbo. But I knew I'd have to go back and look at weights and measures. It was pretty fun to do so.
996 Turbo 6MT per Porsche AG
· CURB WEIGHT 3,395 pounds (2001), 3,505 (2005 S)
· LENGTH 174.6 inches
· WIDTH 72.1 inches
· WHEELBASE 92.5 inches
· HEIGHT 51.0 inches
· POWER 415 hp @ 6000 rpm
· TORQUE 415 lb-ft @ 2700-4600 rpm
· REDLINE 6750 rpm
· WHEELS 18x8, 18x11
· TIRES 225/40R18, 295/30R18
991.2 Carrera 7MT per Porsche AG
· CURB WEIGHT 3,152 pounds (243-353 pounds lighter)
· LENGTH 177.1 inches (2.5 inches longer)
· WIDTH 71.2 inches (0.9 inch narrower)
· WHEELBASE 96.5 inches
· HEIGHT 50.9 inches
· POWER 370 hp @ 6500 rpm
· TORQUE 331 lb-ft @ 1700-5000 rpm
· REDLINE 7500 rpm
· WHEELS 19x8.5, 19x11.5
· TIRES 235/40R19, 295/35R19
So the latest Carrera is 2.5 inches longer and a bit narrower. IIRC, 996 Turbos were always well over their stated weight when we weighed them at Excellence. Would be interesting to see how 991.2s measure up to their weights, as I have less experience with that. Anyway, thought I'd share these numbers.

991.2 turbo is over 3,500 pounds.
2001 996 C2 was some where around 2901 pounds. (250 pounds lighter than 991.2 C2 and almost 2 inches narrower)

And of course a turbo is wider than a non-turbo . . .

As to the initial comment - saying the 911 is a fat pig sounds like something that would go nicely with a "get off my lawn" old guy attitude. Everything was better when we walked to school uphill both ways, 13 year olds knew the value of a 10 hour work day and all business guys looked like Don Draper.

Why compare a turbo to a C2?
991.2 turbo is over 3,500 pounds.
2001 996 C2 was some where around 2901 pounds. (250 pounds lighter than 991.2 C2 and almost 2 inches narrower)

My 99 996 C2 cab weighs 3075lbs.
The 991 certainly LOOKS bigger to my eyes, but glad to see that the real numbers show this car is still pretty light. Compared to so many other sports cars of today’s vintage, it’s still smaller.
I was just on a track yesterday in an AMG E63S. The car didn’t look that big, but still needs 600HP to get around the track quickly because it weighs 4500lbs.
My buddie’s 2018 M2 weighs 3450lbs, and that is a pretty small car, even though it has pretty decent legroom in the back. And still has hundreds on your 991.
The short answer is: your friend is silly

Lol, some of you guys have been around 911s for about 5 minutes and probably never raced, tracked, corner balanced and weighed or actually dealt with any of these issues whatsoever.
I responded with mfg weights in response to the OP's post which cited mfg weights . . . so I was comparing apples to apples and we have no idea what fruit you are using.
Can you provide link so we can see exactly what was weighed. Did it have gas, what was equipment, did they weigh it with driver and etc.

I think its impressive when we can look almost 2 decades back and see that the 996 TT numbers are still impressive to this day. CRAZY WIDE!!
Just for the record my 991.2 S weighed in at a county certified truck scale came in at 3,260 lbs. This is with all fluids, 1/2 tank gas, RS Spyders, glass sunroof, bose, full leather interior, manual transmission, NO PDCC OR RWS.

It’s too bad your friend couldn’t appreciate your car. I’ve been in love with the 911 since the 80’s. My first one is a 991.2. I won’t bore you all with how much I love this car. I’ll summarize that if indeed it’s “a fat pig”, I’m keeping it!

The price of progress in safety and ride comfort. I for one don't mind the extra interior space but I don't love the electric steering and in general it doesn't feel as "tossable." But it's still in a niche of it's own IMO in 2018, with its harder edges (SPASM/PSM) light weight and ride quality commensurate with a $100K+ car.
The 993 was really too small inside in comparison but I did like its agility. It was unfortunately just too slow compared to its japanese brethren after a few years. Design compromises.
My 997 felt right size wise, but the ride quality (PASM) on that wheelbase was crazy bad. Compromises.
I traded out of an M4 when the wife got her Macan into my 991.1. Don't talk about largesse until you drive that car - which is 9" longer and 400 lbs heavier.
Porsche is finding the right balance IMO. We tend to look back with rose colored glasses.
