"The 991 is a fat pig..."
Actually, my friend called it something else I won't repeat here. Was pretty funny hearing it from him given that he's a...996 Turbo owner. Said he couldn't get over how humongous and heavy 991s are. I challenged his notion on the weight—stating a 991.2 Carrera, even with its twin-turbo flat six, is far lighter than his 996 Turbo. But I knew I'd have to go back and look at weights and measures. It was pretty fun to do so.

So the latest Carrera is 2.5 inches longer and a bit narrower. IIRC, 996 Turbos were always well over their stated weight when we weighed them at Excellence. Would be interesting to see how 991.2s measure up to their weights, as I have less experience with that. Anyway, thought I'd share these numbers.

I'm only just learning a bit more about the 911 series but calling the 991 fat and heavy in this day is funny. Coming from a 700lbs heavier "sports coupe" I notice the lack of fatness every day.

Reminds me of the guys who say the 991 is Sooooooo much bigger than the 997...when in reality it’s less than an inch. It just feels bigger because the cabin is bigger due to the longer wheelbase.

I recently purchased a C7 Corvette as a daily driver. The 991 Turbo is going to be more of a weekend car and not something I drive to the office anymore. I don’t think of the 991 as a “large” car, but it is significantly bigger than the C7 Vette is in every way, every dimension.
Not a “problem”, but it did surprise me, I didn’t know that before purchasing the Corvette.

Having driven current generation BMW, Audis, Fords (Mustangs), Chevys (Corvettes), you soon realize that Stuttgart steel just must be lighter.

I have a 991, a 993, and an early 911. The 991 is not fat, but it is large. Very large. Too large. I love it, but if there's one thing I would change it is the size, and it's high-waistedness. My early car and 993 are like driving an extension of your hands. The 991 feels like a sedan.

Having come from cars like the 993, 996 and 997 it took 4 years for me to digest the longer wheelbase. I love the car but it is larger . As for the guy calling it a "fat pig" I think that degrading it to a person who has the car isn't a something a "friend" ought to do . It's good that he did it because it gives you a chance to re evaluate the friendship.

Larry, do you still have a Macan? The 991 seems like a tiny thing the other side of the garage.
My last tiny car was an '84 Scirocco GTI in the UK, 1963lbs. Same visceral feelings coming back now.

The Macan is a different type of vehicle . When I mentioned that a 911 is larger I was only comparing it to 911's of the past . That said the Macan feels small compared to the Cayenne (which we also had) . It was one of the virtues of the Macan (along with PDK and a host of other things).

Yeah, scale. Before buying my 991 I'd only been in a 70's 911, I've since scaled up myself but was hooked back then and it all worked out.
I was led to believe that the increased length a few years back was to allow a hybrid electric motor to be added into the flywheel. Urban myth?

Modern cars are big. It’s a result of government regulation. Blame lawyers, Ralph Nader and the people who want to demonize large corporations, Some of you probably voted for the politicians that push this crap and CAFE standards so it’s your fault too. Porsches are daily drivers to me and a daily driver needs to be new and reliable. There aren’t too many new reliable daily drivers that aren’t large, Porsches are actually some of the lightest out there. So, I don’t have a problem with Porsches being a little larger. I do have a problem with Ferraris being large because they shouldn’t be daily drivers. That’s why I have the last of the small Ferraris, a 355. The 360 doesn’t weigh more but it is big. It’s similiar to 996 vs 991. The material of construction enabled them to build a larger car that weighs the same.

My 996.2 GT3 I ordered NO options (no AC, no radio, no floor mats). Its weight was 100 lbs more than Porsche's spec.
My rule of thumb is to add at least 100 lbs to whatever Porsche says.
