Setting the record straight - the 911 T is a gift from Porsche

My point was simply that a lot of people think a manual in a sports car should be a six, period. I love the T otherwise, but with the seven I have zero interest.

I feel the same way about the new automatic transmissions. 8, 9, 10 gears.. cant get into it. I can understand where youre coming from.

The 7 speed is great except for the tall gears. 7th gear gets locked out most of the time so its mainly 7 to 6 shifts that tend to get missed (grabbing 4). Otherwise its functionally the same shape as the 6 speed (with the lockout). From what i understand the gearing is even taller in the 718 6mt, so it sucks even worse. Even in the 981 gt4. I think 2-4 should be way shorter and rev faster, it would load the turbos more quickly as well.

I'm not sure how the 7th gear lockout works. Over the last 4 days - I shifted from 3rd -> 7th, 4th -> 7th, 5th -> 7th, and 6th -> 7th with no problems. I downshifted from 7th to each of these as well. 7th is a great cruising gear, sits right at 2K RPM at 75mph. The spacing is tight, but no problem at all once you get used to it. Even my wife had no problems after 50 miles and commented that she *really* liked the 7MT gearbox. I was on the fence v. the G50/21 in my 993, but now am firmly in the Carrera T is better camp.

That is great to hear!
Yesterday I got to row thru the gears on a T, and three things caught my attention: First, the clutch is SUPER light. Nearly no effort at all. Second, you can feel and hear the mechanical clicks clearly as you change gears. That is so nice and satisfying! It is also interesting how the spring on the shifter keeps it aligned in the middle of the 3-4 axis, making it easy to consciously pull to the left to select 1-2, let it move naturally to the center for 3-4 or push to the right for the 5-6, making it less likely to miss a shift. Overall a very nice and balanced MT. Again, this from a very short stint on the T, but I liked what I saw.
After soooo many years without a car with a MT, it is nice to go back to one. In the meantime I am having fun driving my son's manual BRZ while he is away at school and I am waiting for my T.

I'll double check it tomorrow and report back, but I'm pretty sure I pulled this a few times accelerating to highway speeds. Thinking about it now, though I may have double-clutched out of habit.

One of the best characteristics of the 7mt in the .2 is the flexibility. You can use it like a 5 speed a 6 speed or use all 7 gears. Only guilt has me use 6 or 7th gear. Power reserves in the higher gears is so ample, you rarely have to downshift for passing. Wishing for a 6mt is understandable, but you'll probably never see it with the new turbo engines. Just too expensive to certify, and would like lower their corporate fuel economy results.

I think this Carrera T is going to be one of the best street-driven experiences Porsche has to offer, previously held in my book by the 981 Boxster Spyder. Very excited to get one in and take for a first drive.
