991.1 Battery Replacement DIY

Thanks for the DIY instructions. My Porsche dealer tried to charge me $750 to change my battery. Bought mine from Batteries Plus, they didn’t know how to take the old one out(free service). Did it myself in 30+mins. Is porsche labor $500/hr? Makes me wonder if I should have changed the front/rear brakes somewhere else instead of paying 4k+ for them to do it.

Just finished my install using the same battery and instructions as the OP. Easy job that took less than 30 minutes. Thanks for the great write-up! I had my battery tender plugged in an all my memory settings are good. One weird thing...as soon as I disconnected the original battery a loud consistent ticking sound came from the frunk drivers side the entire time until the new battery was connected. Any idea what that was...maybe water pump? Lastly, any reason why I would not want to use a battery tender on a brand new battery?

Yeah, unless the battery store had your battery on tender, it’s likely not fully charged despite being new. As you will find out when you plug it on the tender.

I changed out batteries in my Porsche on Friday and went AGM. Advance Auto AutoCraft Platinum H8 with 900 CCA. Approximately $169 after core return. Couple points that have been mentioned.. Unless you are green and a member of the Avengers it is virtually impossible to do this without standing in the frunk. The new AGM battery is NOTICEABLY heavier than a standard battery. A Ctek charger plugged into the footwell will SAFELY keep power and memory until the new battery is installed. This install was completely uneventful UNTIL I placed the LONGER AGM battery into the tray (which it fits perfectly) and lo and behold the last hole to secure HAS NO THREADS LOL. All 3 previous holes to accommodate a smaller battery DO. So I had to secure it to the final factory hole using a nut & bolt. It actually looks OEM. My starter spins stupidly fast now AND all my lights and pixels are WAY brighter. This is a good thread. I hope it helps ppl out.

This 73 year-old bought the large Batteries Plus AGM weighing 55 lbs., got the cables out of the way, stood bent over in the frunk with the battery between my feet and did a quick but deliberate lift (didn't want to do it more than once) and neatly put it on the tray!

New Interstate battery is MTX-49 H8; Batteries Plus still sells the Duracell Ultra SLI49AGM. Heading to either one tomorrow....batteries plus is offering 20% off online discount for in store pickup plus -$18 core charge returned too BTW! Thanks OP best post of the month I've seen...dealer wanted $437 for a new battery in my 2013 CS.

Interstate has 3 batteries that are AMG for this vehicle.
1 - A very small one that weighs almost the same as the stock one (I think 48lbs)
2 - A very big one, mostly pictured in this thread. (57ish lbs)
3 - A middle one that weighs ~ 53lbs
The middle one actually cost more than all the rest. I think they range from $175-$235

Put a new Duracell in my car this week as well (build date July 2013). I didn't want to put that heavy a battery back in the car (as I have posted previously here) but daughter is getting married in 3 weeks - bad timing for an expensive lightweight battery. Was a simple install and the most interesting thing was that its true - the START/STOP engine turnoff button stops working when the battery begins to get weak. Mine had stopped some 10 months ago. Put the new battery in and that feature works again.

For those of you that bought a Duracell battery from Batteries+ in the month of December and January, there is a $10 rebate available.

A few quick battery questions. I bought my 2012 991.1S used last year. What is the chance that it still has the factory battery in it? It is still a Porsche branded battery. My stop/start appears to work fine but I also don't have that on very often. Is there a way to tell what year the battery is? If so, where is the information? I want to proactively replace the battery but if it was done in the last 1-2 years it would be a waste. Thanks.
