If you change the OEM battery with a similar AGM and use a tender during the process, the car will never know what happened.

Update: Well... finally got my Interstate AGM battery Friday. Dealer gave me full credit on the non-AGM battery and sold me the AGM for $249. Works great!
BTW--you don't need a tender...

It's called out on Duracell's website as an AGM49 for my 2015 C2S. Sam's has that one for $169 with a three year warranty.

Mfg date on my car is 3/2015, I purchased 3/2016. Dealer said no warranty as I did not drive it the minimum 6000 miles per year.

Many thanks for the info on initialization...........interesting and makes sense you cannot initialize the aftermarket battery with no Porsche serial number. I'll use my CTEK 3300, and make throw in the Duracell.

Anyone use the cig lighter CTEK connector instead of going direct to the battery leads? Or, alternatively, use the connector in the fuse box?

I hooked up my CTEK to the passenger footwell receptacle when I recently changed to a Duracell AGM49 and did not lose a setting.

Many thanks for the reply John, footwell seems like a far easier route than connecting to the terminals.

Sams did a free battery test for me......they have a nice little handheld unit where they type in the CCA and the current temperature.......then prints out a nice little battery condition report indicating current CCAs and expected battery life.

I broke down and bought an inductance tester... Those things are great because they take the guessing out of the game, they power from the target battery and you input the type of battery it is, the expected CCA, and you get a verdict : this battery is good, it's crap, it needs recharging but it's good... If you expected 900CCA and get 450 you know it's a dud.

I tested it in my garage and my neighbors, it told me we had 2 definitely failed batteries, one still good but low and rechargeable... previously all 3 were testing "fine" on a load tester and caused hours of misdiagnosing since the load tester passed them. Sure enough we replaced the bad batteries and all was well.. Goes to show you sometimes you need better tools... Ironically my porsche battery is/was fine, just low... I really think these cars are simply giant power sucks and the 991 should be practically tethered to a Ctek when not in use ;-(

I'm not that mechanically inclined, but I just replaced my battery and it was really easy! I pulled all the stuff out and went to Batteries+... the guy there even helped me pull out my old battery and gave me the 10% online discount. It was really easy! 20+ minutes saved me $500 at the dealership plus I probably even have a better battery now. Thanks to daberlin and all the contributors to this discussion thread! Nice job, and glad the thread continues to add value to the 991 community as these service tasks come due.

My feeling is dealerships intentionally put the fear of god in the consumer to ensure they return for lucrative service calls, yet oil changes, brake fluid flushes, spark plug and coils, bulbs and battery replacements are not all that different in a 70's Super Beetle from that in our 991 Porsche 911s.

Getting past the fear factor of performing some of this basic work yourself will not only make you appreciate the Engineering that went into the maintenance and repair design of the vehicle, but the satisfaction of knowing you didn't need to outsource the care of your vehicle to someone who cares far less about it than you do. The fact you can save big $$ is just the icing on the cake.

Battery plus has one with a date of December 2017. Should I try to find a newer battery or is a 3-4month battery ok?
