Unhappy 991s won't shift into any gear intermittently - video description

First, a bit of backstroy

This car is a HFS Alumni purchased around 25k miles from a Rennlister. I drove it from NC back to Texas after purchase and had only a few minor issues (cyl 5 misfire on cold start once, did plugs and coils preventatively) over the course of a year until I decided to try my luck at getting the "Stumble" resolved at my local dealer.

Mid August, I bought it to the dealer for sunroof lubrication, seal rail lubrication and to see if they could reproduce and diagnose the stumble. I had no issues with misfires or service indicators at this time.

Clutch depression and uptake is as normal without any sponge feeling, but the gear selector will not engage any gear. I am able to select a gear and then start the car, I can then drive the car in first gear but cannot shift from first into neutral unless I shut off the car.

Not sure if popping out of reverse upon start is a feature or bug.

Any comments from users that have experienced something similar are more than welcomed. I anticipate a warped pressure plate. Will put it on a flatbed tomorrow.

I was unable to edit the subject line, but for clarity this is a 2014 991.1S.

Soooooo sorry to hear this.

I would call PCNA and open a case on it.

They have replaced a lot of 991.1 GT3 engines with not even trying to fix them. I would expect them to do the same here since there are so many issues. Different problem I know, but sounds like a new engine is in order if I'm understanding correctly.

I've never heard anything like this on a 991.1

I think this may be a candidate for a lemon replacement if issues persist.

Did they give you a loaner during all this? What is warranty status? CPO at all?

Please keep us posted!

I'll look into opening up something with PCNA, but as far as I know, the engine has ran smoothly after that major overhaul was completed. No DTCs thus far.

CPO is active until February 2018 and I was provided a Macan during the two month period I was without my 911.

Man that sucks. Definitely looks like something must have been re-assembles incorrectly when your engine was out of service.

I am am curious as to your rough idle. How strong was it? My car had an issue with rough idle reported by the previous owner. CPS was replaced. Also had an occasion by him and one by me of a no start...strong crank, never ignition. And still every now and the. A rough idle. My dealer just checked it and saw no stored codes. Can you elaborate?

Quick update - Made my way into the dealership today to pick up a long-awaited loaner car and spoke with some of the staff there.

Transmission is currently out of the car and pictured below. The car was already off the lift so I couldn't grab a photo of the flywheel. Clutch disk looks to be around 30-40% life left but they recommend replacement while we're already there and labor is on the house. They've said the flywheel is in reasonable condition so no need to replace. Their current thinking is that the clutch disk is getting "stuck" on the splines maybe due to friction material or excessive greasing of the spline. I confirmed that the transmission was never separated from the engine during its last service it shouldn't be related to an issue during reassembly.

Since there was no defect with the pressure plate causing excessive clutch wear, it will not be covered under warranty. But as I mentioned, they are covering the associated labor costs. This combined with the PCA discount, and dealerships general hatred of customer supplied parts are keeping me from balking at their quote for disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing is nearly 50% more than the suncoast kit which unfortunately doesn't have a part number so despite it saying "genuine" I have no real way of knowing.

The car is still with the dealership and I have not heard anything further regarding the status of the car. I did however provide authorization to go ahead and replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. It's taking quite a bit longer than I thought for them to complete this job.

Per STG, I opened a case with PCNA and received an email yesterday that my case was being investigated. This seemed to make the folks at the dealership less than happy as I later received texts from staff with something like "So I heard you opened up a case with PCNA...LOL"

Hoping to have this resolved soon. I still maintain there is something internally wrong with the trans (also have 2nd gear synchro problems) and this is NOT clutch related.

I didn't read the entire thread, but I wonder if the shifter popping out of gear when started has anything to do with the door being open. One of my cars, although an automatic transmissioon, pops out of gear if the door is opened while in motion.

Sorry to hear of your troubles but at least it sounds like the folks at your dealer are nice to work with and also on top of their game, even if it is taking a while for the repairs to be completed. They may just be waiting on parts. Best of luck!
