I had the NA V8 E92 M3 for 5 years before I traded it in the newer i6 biturbo F80 M3. Almost 3 years now and never enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the V8. With 4 months left on the lease I couldnt wait, just bought a 3.8 H6 2015 911 C2S.
I always blamed myself for not keeping the E92 and planning to keep the 991.1even if I get the urge to get another car later in 3-5 years.
I know very few drivers care much about NA vs Turbo however those who do, I believe will look for those 2 cars in 10-20 years from now.
There is something to be said about the linear acceleration, telepathic predictability and sound of a high performance NA car.
I own both a 991.1 gt3 and a f80 M3. I bought the gt3 and leased the m3. In a year when my lease is up I'm definitely going after an E92 competition. I feel like in 10-15 years they will be highly sought after much like the e39 m5 has appreciated in value over the last 2 years or so. With the 991.1 I think it's too early to tell. In general people seem to be responding well to the .2 turbos but it seems like enthusiasts always come back to NA engines. Who knows, in 20 years the 991.1 could be as sought after as the air cooled 911s of the mid 90s are now.
I believe the #1 cars will be iconic and here's why.
First - they are the grand finally of the naturally aspirated engines. We all know this and the #2 crowd will site some awards as if the 3.4/3.8 never received accolades or praise.
Second and in combination being the last of the NA... The #1 to #2 car was also a major shift in technology. More integrated electronics that seem to be awesome on the #2 cars, right now. Also, the #2 cars are faster. While this is all interesting right now... when the 992 comes out and then the 992.2 the 991.2 won't be top dog in speed any longer and will also have a PCM that is dated whereas the 991.1 will still have the naturally aspirated engine. All the things that people are raving about in the 991.2 will be in later models - just better. They aren't making a better non GT naturally aspirated engine.
20 to 25 years this car will be iconic and if you have a rare build even more so.
40 to 45 years if you have one of old .2 gas/turbo cars you will be in the money
The short answer is I believe the .1 will be iconic (and that is how most will answer on a 991 forum) but none of us are getting out of here alive.
The long, and possibly more realistic, answer is
1. 10 years from now no one will be able to drive a manual.
2. So you have a PDK? 20 years from now no one will know how to drive a car period (and we laugh now at those that can't drive a manual).
3. The enthusiasts that think this car will be iconic are all here on Rennlist. Not a lot of us in the grand scheme.
4. Car ownership won't exist in 20 years (ride share, Porsche pass, silver car, Uber (old ppl), Lyft (young ppl), etc.
5. The younger generations, for the most part, don't care about cars. My millennial siblings could care less about cars- and they have means.
6. 991 built in large numbers. It's not a GT car and not rare unless you have voodoo green or acid blue (a joke).
Anyhow as long as the car is an icon to you and you enjoy it who cares what anyone else thinks. But I think it already is and will be iconic. But I love 991 p-cars.
Collectible may be a better word. When I look at the 993 which I owned, I appreciate it for its air cooled engine but it also looks dated and I don't long to own another one. If you crave a 991.1 20 years from now they will likely be available but I doubt they'll appreciate like a well selected stock portfolio or a good piece of real estate.

If some have their way we will all be in autonomous tubs with 500lbs of batteries inside. I sure hope I've checked out of the world by then.
I agree with everything being said so far. Just like how the last of the air cooled cars are now highly sought after, I feel the 991.1 will eventually be in the same boat as it's the last of the non-GT NA cars.
Let's hypothetically say if the gov regulates all manual driven cars to only be driven on enclosed race tracks and autonomous car become the normal means of transportation, then it won't.
From a 991.1 standpoint, if it's a GTS or a nicely built C2/C2S/C4/C4S in a manual, clean with low mileage then it can be.
I think a better comparison is the last NA 335i (N52 engine vs N54/55). According to most on this forum and in porsche circles, the GT cars are really the "special" ones like M.
Another car this comparison brings to mind is the z06. I would prefer (and think will hold value better long term) the c6 7.0L vs the new supercharged one.
Both the M and z06 are the top dog/motors for their respective car companies. A better judge of collectible in my opinion is gt3 now vs when they go turbo
