Default My 991.2 4S overheated this morning.

Hi All,

Went to drive a friend to the train station this morning around 530am.

For the first time I believe, I used my defroster. It's so muggy where I live that the only way to have a clear windshield this morning was to turn the defroster on. I was going back and forth between that and the AC since it made the car unbearably hot.

30 minutes later, I got the warning to pull over and saw my engine temp was 250 degrees.

I immediately turned off the defroster, and turned the a/c off. The engine temp immediately went down to the middle (normal).

As I was 5 minutes from home - I left them both off - and the temp remained in the normal position.

Car has approximately 9000 miles.

Should I add Engine Coolant in a few hours when I go to work at 830? (should be cool to open the cap).

Has this happened to anyone else?

Is this something I should just not take a chance with and call Ray Catena?

Thanks for your advice.

Brad

Thank you!

Would it be safe to drive to Ray Catena in New Jersey from Brooklyn with my A/C off or is this gonna be a tow job?

Morning Bradley, that's a tough call. One I'm not willing to make/risk on your car. It's not a "low coolant issue". Call Catena when they open, and take their advice, and let them "own it".

Will do. Thank you!

As it goes - I went on their site and checked out their service schedule. They're apparently booked till October 9th and then booked on the 10th - opening again on the 11th.

I know in emergency - they can take any car - but they might not have a loaner available - which I would definitely need.

I had that issue in my .1 and once the temp regulated it was fine to drive. Of course I kept my eye on the temp but I was good to go until I made it to the shop. I also had a COV fail that prevented the PSE from engaging.

Also, when car overheats you can turn on heat to remove heat from the engine if stopping if not possible. I was actually stuck on the Belt Parkway going to see my girlfriend when the car overheated.

Good luck. Keep us posted.

Bradley,
It's the "Superman" issue! Sapphire Blue over Red/Black causes this

I had the same issue, take a look at this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/991/9328...991-2-a-3.html

Good luck!

I’d call the dealer and have them squeeze you in (ask nicely)

Bradley’s car is a .2 which I’ve read nothing about any COV (change over valve) issues. Was a small problem in early .1’s (2012.2, 2013, maybe 2014 at latest?)

Yeah, can’t believe this issue is still popping up.

I believe there is also a Porsche dealer in Manhattan? At least there you have alternate transportation. Overheating can damage a car if left for long periods.

Update: Drove from the house to the office - about 30 minutes from door to door - on the belt parkway in traffic - stop and go - with a/c blasting 100%. The engine temp remained normal the entire time.

Will try again later with the defroster on.

Thanks one and all! A real family here.

For coolant, Porsche has pretty much made the gauge stop reading at about 194.

For oil, you'll see numbers as low as 190-ish, and get to about 232 with normal highway cruising.

190 to 195 I have noticed. This one occurrence shot it up to the max line of 250.
