Default X51 vs. Dealers's Homebrew

All - I see another thread about the X51 but thought these new data points merited a fresh start.

I just inquired at my dealer about the X51 and this was his - somewhat surprising - reply:

The X51 Power Kit from Porsche increases your Horsepower from 400 HP to 430 HP. Installed it goes for $22,500.00 plus tax.
Here is what is included in the X51 Power Kit:
1. Contains modified cylinder heads and camshafts
2. Newly developed variable resonance intake system
featuring 6 plus 1 switchable valves
3. Center cooler
4. Optimized engine control including a new engine compartment styling with a titanium colored cover and inserts with "Carrera 3.8" or "Targa 3.8"

Our Power Kit that we offer increases your Horsepower from 400 HP to 445 HP. Installed it goes for $11,270.00 plus tax.
Here is what is included in our Power Kit:
1. Performance exhaust system
2. Performance intake system
3. Performance tune
4. Performance high flow filters

Is this some kind of alchemy? 50% more HP boost at 50% less cost? And with bolt on parts? And all warrantied from a dealer?

That's not bad at all... Personally I would go to Cobb for tuning. Do you know what tune they are using? Lucky for you to have such a mod friendly dealer!

Cobb + Headers (sport Cats) + IPD Plenum + Intake is the recipe for reliable bolt on power.

Exhaust for sound only.

Edit - Looks like you have a #1 car and not boosted.

If they have dyno sheets to back those number up then I'd do it in a heartbeat. FWIW the AWE exhaust I have claims +20HP/ +25TQ, so for $3k thats a pretty damn good deal if you ask me, although I have yet to put the car on the dyno to verify those numbers.

There's the catch, really. Your Porsche engine and drivetrain warranty would be gone.

Do you trust that your one local dealer will (and can) supply you a new engine, should yours blow?

Or will they do all the warranty work on the engine/drivetrain that tends to crop up in the first year or two of ownership?

Plus, I'm pretty skeptical that the homebrew kit will produce that much of an improvement. Even if it does, the Porsche kit, with some pretty significant engine parts seems like it will protect you better. All that extra power equals more heat. The X51 kit factors that in (center cooler) while the homebrew is hoping that just bringing more air in and out will solve that. Heat is the biggest killer of engines, if not managed properly.

Hell, while you're at it, go to the local ricer store and get a coffee can muffler... they're good for another 10HP, at least!

Warranty, warranty, warranty. Why would you guys come to a thread about modifying a car just to give warranty advice?

Because the X51 kit does not void the warranty. When comparing two options, one that is engineered and warranted by the manufacturer, it's relevant. Very relevant.

Did the OP ask for warranty advice?

Actually he did ask that.

Plus the factory option is emission safe too.
I am assuming that to get 45 hp we would need to go catless or at least sport cats in the headers....

Or you could do both and get even more power.

And don't forget about stickers, really cool ones can add 5 HP each!

For 10K you can buy a hell of an aftermarket warranty that will cover the car as it stands at the time of initiating coverage. If you want warranty, that will work.

There is that....

If, of course, you buy the 45 HP boost from intake, exhaust and a tune.

Maybe they used the Stargate Saddam had to figure out how to get to that number....

Did you ask to see the before/after dyno sheet of a car they did? Without that, he can just make up whatever claim he wants.

Keep in mind that the X51 package includes new heads with revised cams and a new intake plenum. Plenum, not just a box. So it's a crap ton of labor. There is a thread on here detailing the install. You understand why it cost so much money. The parts cost is expensive (new heads!) and the labor is also very costly.

The dealer's package really probably only has some form of Cold Air (Hot air most likely) intake, not the actual plenum.

I await dyno data confirmation from the dealer. On the warranty side, he states:
Will not affect your Porsche Warranty or CPO Warranty.
