Your Age vs .1 or .2 Preference
#76
40 yrs old, I have owned three 911's.. 997.2, 4S 991.1S, and 991.2S...
LOL at my OWN POST ABOVE....
I changed preference with age, never got the GT3!
The best one is the 991.2S.... Its a MUCH better track/Mountain driver car than the 991.1S

41 and I love turbos. N/A sounds better and usually a better choice for a track junkie looking to minimize running costs, but turbos are cooler to me and I enjoy going fast. The 3.0T motor with a tune brings the base Carrera into a car faster than super cars from not too long ago. They’re rocket ships on the street and in the canyons.

Very interesting!
I would have been sure the older guys were going to vote NA, but it seems to be quite the opposite. Older crew loves the 991.2.
This tells me that the NA will appreciate in value more due to the younger crowd still looking for it years down the road.

I have become wiser with age and would vote differently than I did when the poll first came out...

I opted for NA because it likely won't be an option for me in the future. I'm 40, owned my 991.1 s for less than 3 months. Coming from an M3, 350z, s2000, etc.
I also live in AZ which can be tough on turbo's... so rwd an seemed like less stuff to break.

Also 43 and love the .1. For me the styling and the engine are favorable though both cars have their merits. I just don’t find turbocharged 3L cars that interesting anymore since seemingly everyone makes one. At least the 911’s is a flat 6! That said if I was willing to concede sound for torque I’d probably end up with another Taycan. They fee much faster in regular driving than the corresponding 911 models. The next great debate will be ICE vs EV.

I'm 49 and can go either way. I love the sound of any naturally aspirated engine but at the same time I love the quick and easy tuning of a turbo. Porsche does an excellent job on its turbo engines, as they still have a great mechanical sound to them that other manufacturers miss by a mile. It also like to rev which I cannot say for other makes of stock turbo engines I have experienced. They seem to love the mid-range and fall off at the top end. That’s not a lot of fun to drive but is good in traffic, I guess.
At the end of the day, I'm waiting on a GT3, so I must give the normally aspirated engine a win, but it needs to rev high. I’d rather rev it out at 5k+ all day, as I just love that intoxicating sound.
I'm also more of a suspension and handling guy so high HP been there done that and its not as enjoyable to me as track driving and twisties.

53 (in a month) and I prefer low end grunt to wringing an engine out for "fun".
Had a 2012 Mustang 5.0 and it needed to be above 4k to really sound awesome / feel alive.
Changed to a 2016 C7 (and then a 2017 2SS 50th Camaro 'vert) where I had ~400 ft-lbs of TQ on tap at 2000 rpms. Much more fun day to day, which is why I'm looking to buy a 991.2 right now.

70+ and have and have had both over the years. First experience with a turbo was a friend's Corvair spyder, in high school - loved that car!! Guess I prefer NA but my (original owner) 914 even had a turbo a good Porsche mechanic friend of mine designed and built back in the late '70's. Had water injection, etc and sure made power, but had the turbo lag of the original 930, which I remember driving, and loving, back when they first came out.
The new turbos are so seamless you don't even realize they're a turbo. Throttle response on my Carrera T and 981 spyder aren't that different! Of course, they've both been tuned...
My wife's RS5 sportback is a turbo and you'd never know it just by driving it.
I'd take either one!

As someone who stupidly took a "great deal" on an Integra GS-R vs. buying a Type-R at MSRP in the 90's, for me getting a 991.1 with a 3.8l/430hp engine mated to a manual transmission was my way of correcting that mistake. 100hp/l++ from NA engines won't be seen in the market probably ever again. Grab them while you can!

My guess and I'm 68, is that the older guys are a little more conservative about how they drive on the street. So an engine that has a sweet spot for power in the range of a NA 911 tends to mean if you are enjoying it you are breaking the law by a wide margin. I mean I have always loved a NA larger displacement engine as a preference. It is why I specifically selected my Cayenne, because it has a 4.8 NA V-8. When I considered a new Cayenne I did not like the fact the S trim went to a 6 cylinder Turbo engine and I needed to buy the Turbo or GTS to get the 4.0 V8 and they are turbo cars. I always assumed the smaller turbo engines had to work much harder especially in a vehicle that weighed 4700 lbs, and that would lead to a shorter life span. So I kept my NA Cayenne. When I started looking to buy a 911 GTS I was set on the 991.1 but after driving several cars I just realized, probably because of my advanced age and more mature driving habits, that the newer 991.2 was just better suited to the driving I do and the way I drive. I think to enjoy a car to the fullest you need to drive it the way it was meant to be driven. It seemed to me, to drive the 991.1 GTS the way is was meant to be driven is to rev it almost to the red line and keep the rpm above 4K. When driving the 991.2 GTS the way it was meant to be driven, means driving it in a lower but much wider range of RPM and it translated a little better to the daily use and possibly a little less aggressive driving. Although superior performance is available should you want it. There is a reason the pinnacle of the 911 Carrera is the fully loaded Turbo S. I also think the older guys just enjoy the added luxury and convenience of the newer edition cars and care less about the noise. While I believe the 991.2 cars also sound great just different in tone but still very exotic. Besides, I wear hearing aids. I can adjust the volume of the world so if I want louder I just turn em up. The old man perspective. It;s encouraging as it shows you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I did and while the .2 were already out for 2 years when I bought my .1, so I had a choice.
But many people think newer is better. Not all the time. My best BMW GS series of motorcycles are my 1986 and 1990, even though I have a 2003 and 2016; the last two I could easily sell if I had to. And given the choice of my 993 or 991.1 GTS. both manuals, the 991.1 would go first.
