R8 Spyder...am I the only underwhelmed?
Parked next to this this morning. I know it's a "cousin." I know it's a V10. I know it's a "super-car." But in the flesh, and compared to my 991.2, I found it to be totally underwhelming. It looks small: almost teeny. Very little "presence." Kind of like a slightly sportier TT. Am I missing something? A Carrera —any 911—still takes my breath away. This makes me sigh.
Except maybe that tush, though. And the exhaust note as the owner pulled away.

I loved the one I had around for 6 years. It was a coupe but it worked for everything. More exotic than a 911 but not as overall good of a car. New one's are super hot to me as well. What do I know though.

I think the coupe looks a lot better thanks to the side blade... especially in a contrasting color. The Spyder is a bit more plain.
I went from an R8 to 991 GTS and missed the R8 often. It was much more exciting to walk up to the car and the sound was better. The 991 is a much more comfortable car and has better creature comforts.

I agree that the R8 was phenomenal to approach while walking up to it. However like you I have a 991 GTS now and I really love to look at it while walking away...
I would say the 991 is a much better driving car without a doubt.
I don't really miss the R8 but sometimes wonder if I should have just kept it.

I also had a silver coupe with a carbon fiber side blade which I agree looks much better than a spyder.

Also the V10 wheels look amazing!
Both amazing cars though!

I'm not plugging Porsche. Just making the observation that, up close and personal, I found the Spyder to be underwhelming to the point of being a little disappointing. Just the curb appeal. The coupe with the blades certainly looks more dramatic. I just couldn't get over how tiny the car seemed. On a relative basis a Lamborghini or Ferrari—even the new NSX—seems to have so much more mass and presence. It just seemed (to me) like a mini-supercar. ironically I never get that impression from a modern 911. The cars seem optically to have more mass and presence.

It's one inch shorter than a Bugatti Veyron for gosh sake.
