The southern route, you would be stuck with WA and OR with relatively low highway speeds, once into Idaho, then Utah, I believe the speed limits are higher, however not too sure about Wyoming, but it's nice and flat, so maintaining a high average should be pretty simple.
Not sure what I would do once I got to Salt Lake City, every fibre in my body tells me not to drive backwards to go forward, heading east out of SLC actually arcs north, then back south. Heading south, your going south, then cutting east once you get onto 70, however, looks like mountains and not clean lines of site, possible a national park or two too, so east out of SLC on 80 is likely the better bet.
Then there's the wild card run - east on 90 out of Ellensburg, rolling hills and some mountains, but into Idaho after Spokane, and a fairly solid 85mph all the way to the Wyoming border (maybe even past it?), then pretty much drop down into Denver. Google says it's 103km more, but I think the running average speed would be higher. This would likely be the way I would run it.
That being said, the best run I have ever done was 1000miles door to door. this was twenty years ago before governance dictated that if I exceeded the limit by 40kmh, my car would be impounded, if caught - it was the end of an era in BC, total elapsed time was 11:42, and the time started from receipt from Chevron at 12th and Grandview in Vancouver, and was weighed against the clock above the bar in the Keg, Fort McMurray. I do not think I could replicate that ever again, and as such, I think it would be impossible to hit 14:00hrs with a border crossing and partial unknown roads.
To my thinking, best case scenario would be maintaining an 80mph average, with 4.5 stops (not sure if I can run 80mph for four hours in the turbo with enough fuel), so the absolute earliest arrival time would be 18 hours, respecting the fact that driving in another country may have unseen dire consequences if caught at high speeds in some locations, and of course, getting across the border.
20 hours (running 70mph average) is likely a more realistic elapsed time, with the same number of stops, IMHO.
Last run I did was to Edson in the summer - 1000km (600miles) door to door, in the 991. Took my lady friend with me, and although I managed to do only one unplanned stop on the way up (we had to stop in Japser because the river 'was beautiful' and you're 'going to fast to take in the natural beauty', and, 'what is wrong with you, don't you ever need to pee'?), northbound was just under 8 hours, I was somewhat happy with the time, she was not.
Southbound was even worse, mountains, lunch, ice cream and picture opportunities in Mt. Robson park buggered the time so badly, it will not be mentioned. Basically, I couldn't make a reasonable case for running fast two ways, so it was a little (lot) more touristy.
But this is an intriguing idea.

Had the opportunity to have some photos taken with a real camera over the weekend through a new photographer local to me that wanted to get her portfolio started - really liking the way these hi-res pics came out
