Got the dreaded engine control fault error 2 weeks ago. 2015 with F-series engine at 22,000 miles. New engine on route - arriving Tuesday. Really pleased with how quickly this was handled by my local dealership, no hoops to jump through, went straight to new engine.

What ratio track to street miles if you don't mind disclosing?

Mostly street miles, maybe <500 track miles with a few "rally" type events thrown in. Wasn't until the most recent track day where it was holding onto gears longer in the higher rpm range when it threw the error. First time it happened I got an engine control fault reduced power message . Went into the pits, turned off the car, turned back on and errors cleared. Went out the next session, same error at the same part of the track. This time the engine control fault - okay to drive message stayed on. Luckily the reduced power message went away and I was able to make it home without any problems. Idled rough afterwards. Noticed quite a bit more oil consumption that day as well.

That's awesome. My dealer is exhausting every other possible option before deciding to yank my motor. Understandable though. I had a misfire code with reduced power at high RPMs, and a recurring catalyst efficiency code. The car idles rough, and sounds rough throughout all RPMs.

So far a coil pack was replaced, secondary air pump, and now the exhaust manifolds have been removed and inspected. On the bright side I do have a new Cayenne loaner which has been a great daily driver, but I miss my GT3 already!

That is almost certainly going to be a new engine.

It is, but their diagnosis is a strange one. They believe it was a faulty catalytic converter whose bits ended up in the combustion chamber somehow to cause the misfires. Because of that they had to pull the head off and inspect for bore scoring in cylinder #4.

Congrats! It's gotta be a good feeling to get back into the car again to start the break-in process.

Here's my update. Because of the strange diagnosis the car is in a hold state until PMNA comes back with the green light for the new engine, or they may even try and "fix" my current one. I'm hoping they'll just replace it since I would still be at risk for future rocker arm/finger follower wear. My gut is telling me the root cause is still the finger follower wear, not the catalytic converter.

If anyone is curious what the combustion chambers looks like after 9800 miles:

My 2016 991.1 had its engine replaced middle of 2017. The new engine pulls like crazy and has had 0 issues. 90% track 10% street. My brother in law has the 991.2 and we have very similar exit speeds coming out of turn 16 at Sebring and his car will not pull away from mine at all with very similar throttle responses. I plan on keeping my 991.1 making subtle enhancements until the wheels fall off or I maximize the cars ability and need a new platform to work from.

Does the engine change show up in Carfax or Autocheck?

Did you have an aftermarket exhaust system on the car?
