harbor freight baby. the $25 one high volume pump. lasted me 2 years and is pretty fast. keep it simple so easy to acquire crap to take the the track.
what i use every track event: air gauge, jack, torque wrench, air pump, impact wrench, jack stands, zip ties (transponder), and wire cutters for the zip ties. On RARE occasion I need something more than that list, but I still haul a bunch of crap anyway... i'm to the point if it doesn't fit in the box on the front of my trailer I don't need to bring it.

I have this one, similar and a big step up from a cig inflator, this thing will move some air but requires clipping to a battery, either on the car or a jump box. Small and lightweight it's a great little compressor.
Check out any of the VLAIRs, they get good marks.

Interdynamics Truck Air 275PSI portable, cig lighter. 10 years of hard use and still going strong. I can't believe it still works, but it just keeps going.

One advantage of the nitrogen tanks is it takes about 2 seconds to fill the front tires back up to street pressures at the end of the day, and about 4 seconds per year tire. That is just the time to fill, not the time to walk over to the tire and attach the inflator...
I find air compressors to be slow and tedious at the track. If you make it a habit, I'd recommend investing on this setup: http://www.prestacycle.com/product/p...gen-cylinders/
I use the 30 CF. Costs me $20 to fill up with nitrogen and it lasts roughly 1/2-3/4 of a year worth of track days.

This is the unit I bought. Approximately $120-150 USD and available (with other branding) on Ebay. Its a two piston design (more robust) with an air filter each end which screws on. Its a 150 psi unit but the key thing is the volume it pumps which is 150L per minute. This makes it able to pump up all four tyres in a matter of minutes and be used on multiple cars before cool down needed. It attached to the battery via alligator clips and has a built in in line fuse to protect the cars electronics however FastLaneTurbo idea to hard wire a harness to the cars batter to save fussing around with unclipping the plastic cover under the hood is a really good one....
