Nah, maybe last time money was cheap. 2007-2008. A little premium for a short while. But this is IMO a thing we have never seen with Porsches. Maybe someone that is a bit older than me can chime in if this ever happened in the 70s and 80s? RS was never a very popular car outside the true enthusiasts and track people. Things have changed with the 991.

So here is an example of real bidding/$ for those that didn't see. Not sure what original MSRP is, but this is trending $50k+ and climbing. There is still 7 days left in the auction and reserve is not met. Gorgeous car. Good test of market. Will be interesting to see if it makes it to $300k

For my education, why do say that? Top end a joke yes. But bottom end, those are real bids. Your point is that they won't really pay? Or they know the reserve is so high that they aren't serious?
Here is a sold auction at $363 for a lava RS
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911-...m=111839986978
And another lava $329. Both of these $100k over

I couldn't even get a new 4.0 from dealer. Wasn't high enough on the VIP list. Had to look for a used one with spec I liked. Took about a year before it came up for sale. By then the market was below MSRP. Now it is what is it.
The market for 991RS seems to be around $75-100k over.
Who knows what it is in 12 months.

These kind of frenzies are nothing new ; I remember the introduction of the 930 in '76 and I think the mark-up percentages were similar to what we're seeing today . It happens with most new highly anticipated luxury cars - even the ''New Beetle '' had some large mark-ups in some markets initially . Remember the Boxster intro ? I know a woman who paid 20K over for a new MB SL that she just had to have when they came out .Complete waste of money , but it didn't matter because she ran a hedge fund . I don't doubt there are a number of 300K plus sales of the RS , but to construe that is where they will stay is foolish . As the cars get delivered and all the guys who got one to make a buck come to the realization that maybe a couple dozen people will pay these numbers it will all settle out . I think that time will be sooner than later as I suspect many of the first cars delivered went to people who had no intention of keeping them - and I think there are still many more to come that will end up on the market when they arrive .

997RS4.0 - I tend to agree with you that this is the first time I'm seeing such markups with new Porsche products.
Some dealers are asking for $400k for a new RS - this is a markup of 100%.

Why is that? I should ask out of the "second tier trinity" (Viper ACR/16RS/675LT) how many have you driven? Perhaps that will be my attempt at a youtube video that keeps everyone debating...

Putting a weaponized Viper in with the usual Euro supercars would be fresh.

I bought a 14 viper (for 35k off) on a Friday and sold it on a Monday.
For the street, there couldn't be a worse car. The clutch feel, gearing doesn't work at all.
On track, when you never need first gear, sure.
On the street, it was not enjoyable. And I wanted to love it...
