Porsche to Unveil New Model Soon

While I agree there needs to be something 'alot' more special than the 911 and priced in the $400-500K bracket; Porsche's strongest competition (street care wise) will come from McLaren.
When the 12C/650/675 replacement (P14) comes, it will need some competition from Porsche.

Porsche to Unveil New Model Soon
Watching the WEC round in Nurbergring, and John Hindhaugh (the commentator) past half way in the race the said (I'm paraphrasing) that 'it was widely thought, and including Porsche, that after Le Mans, that Porsche were not going to continue with their GT program in 2016 for WEC. Porsche and Management of WEC met and it was agreed that Porsche need to continue in GT. So, Porsche will compete while mid engined car is being developed for 2017.'

Vaughn Wyant...
That's nice. There are TWO of these in Saskatchewan, Canada!
https://twitter.com/PorscheSK
And they somehow managed to get the Gulf logo embossed on the headrests of the Saskatchewan cars!!
Crazy Canucks and their PTS!!
... BTW, if you haven't heard of Saskatchewan, it's north of
the northernmost point of somewhere in remote North Dakota
(and Montana)

It appears Vaughn Wyant (with, or without, silent investors) is the
owner of the two Gulf 918s. He, as you know, is the owner/principal
of two Porsche dealerships in Canada - Saskatchewan & British Columbia!

Very timely post. I just got home from the unveiling of two 918s
in Gulf Livery at Porsche Centre of Saskatoon.
The owner of the dealership, Vaughn Wyant, went into quite a bit
of detail about the ordeal he had to go through with Porsche and
Gulf to be able to get the cars painted in the Gulf Racing scheme.
He initially approached the President of Porsche Canada, who went
to Porsche AG with the request.
The reply was "if you can get approval from Gulf, we will build them
for you. But you will never get it approved." Turns out that the
approval from Gulf wan't really all that difficult, and after some
back & forth with Porsche, they agreed to build them as requested.
He also mentioned that another Gulf 918 had just just surfaced
on instragram, but went to great lengths to point out that his 2
cars were unique in a few ways. Those differences included the
period-correct matching paint colours, the "Gulf" logos embossed
in the headrests and the lack of any green paint on the lettering
or the brake calipers. Sounds like the deletion of the green paint
took some persuasion, but Porsche finally agreed that it would
look stupid with the blue & orange paint scheme.
This may all seem pretty trivial, but when you're paying $1.4
million USD each for these cars, you want to protect your investment.
He plans on selling one and keeping one.
Here are some crappy cell phone photos (I somehow failed to
get a shot of the calipers, but I believe they were black). Also,
I'm sure that there will be some better shots showing up on
twitter at #918gulf. Here's a link to some of the stuff from
tonight's event.

By the way, some of the drama attributed to getting the options
on these 918s is a bit over-hyped. Anyone ordering a 918 could
change the color of the calipers from 'Acid Green' to 'Dark Silver'
by paying US$2800 for that option!

Henry: I have more on this PTS Gulf 918 story if you are interested.
See what I just wrote in the '918' Forum, Post #15:

I'm glad these owners went through the trouble of resurrecting this colour scheme with both gulf blue and gulf orange together! Very befitting of this extraordinary car! I'm also happy they didn't make them identical, as it adds a little more to the fascinating lore of these cars. And the (good-natured?) rivalry is just fine in my books too! If you're going to put together million-dollar, one of a kind (er, three of a kind) super cars, you might as well try to outdo the other guy!!
As to the US owner's claim, I wonder if it is the second clause ("and is being developed by Porsche AG /PCNA") that may be the differentiator. Perhaps the SK cars were developed instead under the aegis of the independent Canadian subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada Ltd. Or do you know if all 918s in Canada were also handled by PCNA because of their limited and special status? Maybe one of the Canadian 918 customers can help us here? Whoopsy?
(On an unrelated note, it was really nice to meet fellow RLer CP ZED (and your pal GZ) today, and to drive around the lovely back roads of the Fraser Valley with you! And we look forward to seeing you again at Rennsport! )

Wait, why do we "need" another car in the $400,000 segment? Are the 1% of the 1% of the 1% really that hard-up for more supercars that will barely be used?
I'd vote for a more affordable car for more enthusiasts.

people with money like exclusivity... and will gladly pay for it. I dont think porsche would want to dilute the brand while they are profitable with cheaper models. We all remember how 911 owners felt when the boxster debuted.

to make money for them. That's surprisingly...familiar (please pardon the pun)!
Finally, after all these years, it makes perfect sense. We now have finally established the surprising
motive ($$$$? who would have thought?) for their automotive construction business since 1948.
And as Yogi said '"It's like déjà vu all over again."!
