Question for me, is at what $$ and speed level do I switch from streetable track car to proper race car with slicks, cage, etc.? GT4 cup will likely be faster and safer than the RS, may (hopefully!) cost significantly less, and depreciation and operating costs may be reasonable compared to the RS. And GT4 cup would compliment the GT3 nicely if keeping both.

GT4 will be slower than the GT3 RS - the GT4 rules require that the "original aerodynamics of the car be maintained" and a power-to-weight ratio of 3.5 kg/hp. (GT3 RS is 2.84 kg/hp, GT4 is 3.48 kg/hp). The GT4 sadly won't be as special as what we all hope for.

Take a look at the Aston Martin GT4 vs the GT3/GTE race cars to get an idea of what the GT4 will look like. Some of the early GT4 Cup footage has the same aero package as the road going GT4.

PS: If I wasn't 6'4" I would buy a used F3 from the UK for about $30k for the track..

We'll see, GT4 cup will presumably have slicks, which alone is worth at least 2 seconds on a typical US track compared to SC2. Then add suspension tuned for the track with no compromises for street use. Could come out close.

As soon as you open your wallet.

GT4 cup will likely be faster and safer than the RS,

Safer in stock form on track, yes. Faster? Not so sure.

Maybe, maybe not. Based on landed cost of a new 991 Cup, I don't foresee Cayman Spec racer coming at a big discount to RS. Hope to be proven wrong here.

Yes

Yes
A lot of variables. My opinions/guesses above.

You've seen the videos of it in testing right? Just can't see it happening - I own a 3.8L 981 Race car so pretty aware of what the setup can do, but the GT4 regulations will hold the chassis back significantly.

I'm hoping that a positive effect of the regulations is keeping the price down. I don't really care how the lap time compares with the RS, as long as the car is decently fast - which it surely will be. The appeal is the grip, handling, safety, and other benefits that come from it being a Porsche factory cup car (as opposed to a street car modified to become a race car).

Here is a link to the technical regs for the GT4 series, it's not a cup car. It is required to maintain the Aero package of the street car, required to maintain at least one catalytic converter on the exhaust, exhaust has strict DB limits, limited to 2-way adjustable suspension etc. It'll have a sequential box, which is good but expensive to maintain.

Randy Pobst is the best. I think he could convince me to buy a Nissan Versa if he really wanted to.

Mark Webber (Maybe not most accurate text I have seen..., a lot of small factual errors, but nevertheless)
