Interesting. Guess it is wrong. Don't remember if I touch the rollbar when I sat in the Geneva car.

On the other hand if it was made of carbon I'm sure it would have been mentioned.

Edit: You can see the welds on Porsche pictures.

Hi Peter - I've heard from several of the Euro guys that Bilsterberg has really strict noise regs (like Laguna) on track days (maybe Porsche has an exemption) and even stock GT3's of some vintages fail. For this reason, I was thinking of missing this otherwise interesting track on the trip overseas.

Ya, interesting. He seemed to suggest it was made of "tiny ***** of glass and tiny ***** of carbon" mixed in. Also I heard him say the Mg roof panel could theoretically be swapped out (or something like that) since it provides little to no additional support to the RS roof structure (but is there only for weight saving). (Caveat: my technical Dutch is not particularly good.)

[QUOTE=Petevb;12314932]So... The word I got was that exactly such a hardcore limited edition was planned, and even approved by the Porsche board. Only to be shot down. By the VW board.

That is really bad news! To me the 991rs is more of a gt3+. The 991gt3 is such a good dual purpose car so it seems strange to make the RS another dual purpose car?

Well, assume there is a Gen.2 RS that might at least get some of the characteristics of the extreme one.

No review dare to say about the RS Porky heavy Turbo chassis
designed and built to manage the turbo torque (RS as muuuch less torque indeed)
and used for RS for economical (higher than ever before for VW profit)

200k+ and they
have to use an heavy chassis???

Mclaren and Ferrrari are still celebrating the news...

Is it technically possible for Porsche to make a 991 which has the same track capability as the RS, while being more raw and fun at reasonable road speeds, without being excessively harsh? Or is there instead an issue that making it so capable on track unavoidably makes it feel like the car isn't doing much at reasonably road speeds?

I don't have answers, just posing the questions.

I was considering doing a trackday at Bilsterberg but didn't for various reasons. Anyway in the details for the trackday they wrote that Ferraris and Astons was not welcome (too loud), GT3 and GT3RS where welcome but not too many...

Good question, I guess when It comes to fun road car we all have different roads to play at! I can't even compare the driving situation between my two residences. In the south Swedish countryside we have amazing roads. Great visability and a lot of fast and slow sweepers with hardly any traffic! Central Florida is quite the opposite.

I've got a 10min drive to the ferry that takes me to the Autobahn. The RS is not a good Autobahn cruiser but some people like the feel of doing 190mph. I prefer a different car for long distance trips. Maybe a 991gt3?

I feel that the 991gt3 is such a good car for both track and road that they could have made the RS a bit more extreme. Noisy and lighter?

Maybe this was one of the disputes between Piech and VW boss Winterkorn? Ferdinand has always stayed very true to Porsche racing DNA. 917, CGT and so on!

You wont want to be replacing the rear bumper on the 991 GT3RS boys! I have on file somewhere from the factory that the rear bumper is not a PU but instead made from a lighter material using CF/GRP mix and the the black trim work below is made of some kind of lightweight honeycomb extrusion. The point was to save around 1kg in weight. I was told the replacement cost of the rear bumper plus the trim is in excess of $5000 USD as a result of the exotic construction. The front bumper is a standard PU item (same as GT3).

Infact you wont want to be crashing the 991 GT3RS at all! The front fender prices in CG, bonnet, front and rear bumpers together painted and fitted would be a 30,000 USD proposition. Track insurance mandatory!

Ugh, don't remind me. Yesterday, while driving the GT3, a big chunk of tire (retread?) flew off a minivan in front of me on the highway and hit my front bumper cover. Cracked it significantly and bent the mesh in on one side. This stuff seems a bit fragile, hitting things isn't desirable. Waiting to see repair vs replacement cost. OK breathe, "it's just a car, it's just a car, it's just a car ..."

Found a reference:

Also, the deck lid panel in black is made of some new glass fibre reinforced plastic material. And the lighter wiring harness and integrated helper springs reduce overall weight by 1 kg each.
