I would never walk into a luxury car dealership unless I could easily write a check for the car I was interested in. Bought my first BMW at 49 and just bought my first Porsche at 59 a 2015 Macan S.
My first Porsche was a 2008 997 Carrera - I was the dealer's last customer on Christmas Eve, 2007. I was 56, had just changed jobs and received a significant pay raise.
It was the start of an addiction -- there have been four more 911's and 2 Panameras since then!
