I heard the same today as I locked in my build. My sales person (senior guy at big dealer) indicates that RS will come into production early next year and because they will be wide body, once they are in production there wont be any more "regular" gt3 production. So for those on a list and with a car in production at that time, there may be the opportunity to switch from regular GT3 to RS.

Nice up sale. Would you like fries with those?

If the prediction of late Feb 991 GT3 production end with half MY2015 volume being produced as another member has been told then that would indicate 1200-1300 units total for 991 MY014+MY015 production. I can see the 991 GT3RS being at least a 1300 unit run.

As much as Im on record with regards to my speculation on this subject (end production Feb 2015, start of 991 GT3RS production after, RS launch Paris early October, RS base RRP $175K etc etc) Im still struggling with the logic as to why PAG would stop 991 GT3 production even though I have stated many logical assumptions myself. Sure the evidence with increased feedback form dealer, PTS order expectations etc indicate its a real possibility, but they have just introduced sport bucket seats in the US and clearly excitement for the car is now reaching crescendo as more are delivered, put on track and new owners wax lyrical. Something still doesn't gel for me on all of this....

I was under the impression that they built all 911 variants on the same assembly line. If true, there must be some other reason not to produce GT3's and RS's at the same time.

Macca, you are right over the target. Something definitely doesn't gel here!

Back in March of 2013, when Detlev von Platen was interviewed at the NY Auto Show for the Wall Street Journal, he made a point of saying that for 2014, 10% of all 991's sold in the US would be gt3's (1.20 min in the attached video).

Since they (PAG/PCNA) were in control of US gt3 dealer allocations, that exact number (10% of all) was planned into production. At no point in the marketing of this vehicle from Geneva 2013 to the date of the stop sale earlier this year, did PAG or PCNA EVER hinted that they would be winding down the gt3 early!

In terms of the VW Group (think larger volume) and expected increased profits for each model line, it makes no sense for Porsche to pull back from producing a healthy dose (at least 10% of total 991 production) of gt3's going forward. 'Mike in CA' has a theory which says they don't have capacity to do both - gt3 & gt3 RS. I challenge that assumption. There is capacity if they want to do it (even a third shift, if needed)...at Zuffenhausen & other locations*. And they could also cut back on base and lesser S 'spec' 991 production at Zuffenhausen... take a look how many unsold MY2014's are sitting at US dealers right now!

I can think of only two reasons why PAG has decided to eased out the 991 gt3 this early in time:

a) For reasons of liability, they want to limit the number of gt3 engines out in the field!

b) They have Cycle 6 emissions issues which have not been solved or negotiated to the satisfaction of governing authorities. Thus, they are going with a different engine in the near future...and need time to redesign the content of this particular gt3 model to match the new engine.

The only silver lining I see in this 'cloud' is that most of the key technology developed for the current 991 gt3 (pdk sport, Rear Axle Steering) will now be offered on the upcoming 991 gts model that will be announced shortly. That is my hope...not inside information! But it makes sense. The technology is already developed, needs to be paid for since it's expected gt3 sales are being eliminated, and it will create buzz & sales for this face lifted .2 991 platform.

Saludos,
Eduardo
Last night at Hood Canal, WA

*Zuffenhausen 981 Boxster production could be moved entirely to Osnabrück where both Cayman & Boxster are currently built. Panameras, currently welded and painted at a VW plant in Hanover, is scheduled to be all done at Leipzig by 2016. That could be delayed and...gt3 & RS's could be done at Leipzig along with the Macans in that dedicated Panamera space.

Could there be a limitation to the GT engine capacity, ie. either GT3 or RS, but not both?
The reason for my speculation is there are 'finished' MY'14 GT3s still waiting for engines, that won't get replacement engines until mid/late September!!!! If Porsche had the GT engine capacity, ALL of the MY'14s would have replacement engines before their Vacation break?

It is very difficult to get consistent answers from Porsche at any level. When my dealer secured a November '14 build I was told I could have PTS and it was approved. Then I was told there were no Nov '14 PTS slots and so the car was moved to Feb '15 production (next available PTS build) where it evidently remained until last Friday when PAG told PCNA it was being moved back to Nov '14, and only for standard paint, because there would be no GT3 production in Feb '15. That is what I've been told by my dealer who got it from Mr. Joe West. I spoke to Melissa Witek (Exclusive) in Atlanta who indirectly confirmed the details I had been given. I agree that stopping production does not seem to make much sense, save for reasons such as Eduardo suggested. The purported debut of the 991GTS (aka 992?) in Nov at the LA auto show seems to dovetail further with his hypotheses. I believe I saw a $1000USD gas guzzler tax on my build sheet, so CAFE standards are not a 991 GT3 strong suit.
