991 GT3 production ending
#181
Had two 997 GT3 (MK1 and MK2) and then a 997GT3RSMK2 and it was worth every extra penny it had cost more than the GT3's - i actually never looked back to the GT3's.
I do expect the same for the 991GT3 vs RS. Even so I will try to keep the GT3 because it is such an exciting and nice to drive car - even for DD.
So yes I will sort of trade up to an RS - if I can get one
Also I have to admit that I currently enjoy my 991GT3 much more than my RS because I can use it so much more. I was not really enjoying the RS on the streets or as a DD - nope. But it was great on the track.
This all said, I did roughly 5000 km in two years with my RS and I already did 4500 km with my GT3 in a tad over 7 weeks - this speaks for it (the 991GT3)- me thinks.
P
PS: my all black with white tail lights GT3 attracts a lot attention (not that I need or want that). Even more than the RS. It looks terrific

once you drive an RS, you will understand.
it's not for everyone. it's loud, giant wing, etc etc. but for the right person, the $50k is well worth it. and it's really still a street car. those who think RS is a "track car" is sorely mistaken. drive a cup, then you realize RS is really no so great on track.

Peter, thanks for the feedback! I think this is exactly what makes the GT3 such an amazing car. Its versatility is truly a selling point. Perhaps it's not as track focused as an RS, but the 2-3 seconds per lap could possibly be quickly forgotten about by the mere fact that it also has outstanding street presence. Again, I'm merely speculating as the 991 RS hasn't been announced nor has any of its performance specs. But, for those who have been able to accept the PDK-S and have jumped into the fray from either a .1 or .2 RS seem to share in your opinions. I just wish I would've sold my GTR sooner and got on a GT3 list sooner before the engine and allocation fiasco came to fruition.
It would be very tough for me if I would had to decide between the 991GT3 and an RS assuming that the 991GT3RS will be as "raw" as the 997.2 was. For me the RS was not enjoyable on the street - also always way to fast (even so the 991GT3 is even faster). The RS became quickly a track only car and such - due to my limited possibilites to find track time - was most of the time parked up in a garage (as I have mentioned before you can easily see this from the mileage I have put on it).
I always was an auto-box hater but an hour in the 991GT3 last October at a test drive convinced me that PDK-S is very very good. And now since I have the car close to two month I actually love it - on the street and on the track. To be honest, I never used auto mode on track and not yet have used the sport mode. On the street I use very often auto which makes daily life very easy and when I need to make more brisk progress or have another mind than the auto-box-brain then I can easily and so quickly overrule it.
What I also admire is the fact that the ratios a so close - I probably even would say this box is much better than a manual box could be .... (one half year agao I would have laughed about everyone saying this ).
Also impressive is how quick the box adapts to changes in driving stile which makes it even easier for street driving.
On the track? Not sure if I would like auto-mode. I want to keep total control of what is going on. Since coming from a history of "only" manual cars I do not had a long adaptation time to the paddle shifting. is is for me just a different way of selecting the gears manually (without need to use a clutch on top). So, I can't say I am missing the manual box and yes if the RS would have the option for manual I would go with PDK-S
Also no worries regarding overreving which was an issue (the worries) with my 997.2RS. Since I had a very expensive engine failure and warranty only does step in when no overrevs have happend this was always in the back of the mind and made (down) shifting less enjoyable. After all I am not a pro!

My dealer tells me that RS's will be in very short supply. My 11 RS wasn't that much fun on the street. I picked up a '15 allocation. We will see if I like it better than my turbo. My dealer did not confirm the Feb hard stop on GT3 production.

That's how I feel. I had an 08 RS but figure a GT3 will be a lot easier to live with on the road. I doubt I'll pursue an RS this time around.

I'm far from being the most connected guy, but I'll add this bit of info anyway... which comes right from the mouth of Porsche USA CEO Detlev Von Platen this morning... GT3 production is NOT stopping in February.
carry on as you were.

Alex. That's great news if true. To be honest it makes more sense. I think PAG will "relaunch" the GT3 with the RS in Oct at Paris and as such wouldnt be logical to do so if order books are full and production is ceasing at the end of February...

Out of curiosity, what was the venue where Von Platen made his announcement/comment?

The CEO should tell others on his management team. Andrew Pine called me today for several reasons and he confirmed GT3 production is over effective February 28, 2015.
What a surprise PNA talks out of both sides of its AS......
As I have said many times a dysfunctional organization.

I had originally asked him to verify production-ending rumors when they surfaced, but he had told me that he had not heard anything, and had no solid info to share.. He's not one to speak when he doesn't know so I appreciated his honesty. But this weekend he was able to speak to Von platen at pebble and he asked him a direct question and got that answer. Again, just relaying info, which I normally abstain from doing as I'm not a connected person at all, but felt this was worthy.. Whatever that's worth to you.
