Default Paddle Neutral

In an effort to turn our attention away from rampant speculation about the stop sale issue, I was curious to find out from owners if they've played with the paddle neutral function at speed yet.

Anyone?

I've not tried to do any "tricks" with it but I've played with the feature a bit. It's kind of fun to pull the paddles and blip the throttle at a stop if you want to. If you pull the paddles while moving the current gear begins to flash in the display. If you allow the car coast down, the number will continue to flash but the gearbox will select lower gears in succession so that when you release the paddles again you are in the proper gear for your speed.

^^Thats pretty cool. This will also have to be played with in a wet parking lot...hypothetically like I did when I was 16...totally hypothetically...

Mike what happens when you pull the paddles in at speed and then just drop them back? Does it snap back into gear or smoothly reengage?

It's not that different from disengaging and engaging a manual clutch at speed. If you're not applying throttle when you release the paddles you can feel it but re-engagement is quite smooth. If you're giving it gas, there can be a lurch. Like I said, I haven't experimented with this much but I suspect you could get pretty creative.

listuey, I'd like to refine my original reply. I hadn't used paddle neutral much and my recollection was faulty. I just came back from a drive and was playing with the feature a bit so:

If you pull the paddles at a given speed, revs drop to idle if you're not applying the throttle. When you re-engage the engine returns to the current revs with a "whump" from the exhaust but it's all very smooth.

Same as above but you rev the engine to a couple thousand RPM over, then dump the paddles. Engine revs drop to more or less the original level then the clutch re-engages, again very smoothly. This is one part that was different than I remembered.

Also, if you allow the car to coast down when holding the paddles in Auto mode, the numbers in the display don't change until the revs drop to around 1500 pm but as soon as you re-engage the clutch the gearbox smoothly downshifts to the appropriate gear.

Same situation as above in Manual mode, unless you get all the way down to near idle speed, the gearbox will re-engage in the same gear you were in when you pulled the paddles; you can literally lug the engine just like with a MT.

Hope that clarifies things a bit.

Thanks Mike, very helpful. It's definitely one of the things that is difficult to envision without driving the car directly, but I am glad they added the feature. I hope the NorCal roads are treating you well- I am originally from CA but now living through the dead of winter in chicago counting the days until may when my car comes and it warms up.

Hehe, agree with Hoopumpers.
The other stuff you mention can be done with a lowly Carrera. The clutch dump, however, not so much (except launch) -- just snaps back in gear w/o drama.
