Thanks for the link 0Q991. There's plenty of detail in there and finally it all seems accurate (early reviews had some mistakes). Its good to hear some expectations on track performance. I believe the 991 GT3 will actually better the MC12 on any given track...

@Macca -- no problem. I find myself running a search for new reviews at least once daily...Hoping for an in depth one that includes track testing for some numbers soon...

I'm starting to wonder, might this car be too fast? Certainly too much car for the road (but get it anyway if you must have a 991!), and I don't have a need to be routinely hitting 160 mph+ at the track (safety concern). If this GT3 is now its own thing, and no longer really has the 911 feel (lovable quirks and all), a track-oriented version of the new Cayman could be just the ticket. I wouldn't mind getting a car with much of the character of the new 991 GT3, but at substantially less cost and more sane speeds. I heard a new Cayman R or even GT3 version might be in the plans, but I don't know where that stands.

Manifold

Its definitely too fast. Im not sure they do slow uber performance cars.
Also any driving on the track is a safety concern.
If you want quirks try the dash and driving my 993
There is a new Cayman R on the way and it sounds like it has your name written on it. Should be fun with 6 speed. Very balanced and safe handling.

Seriously tho. I bought this car for Targa (Tarmac Rally) track and touring. Ive been using my 993 for 13 years. Shes a great lass but even with 80k usd of modifications shes not "fast". She is fun however. Ive been told by a friend in the business who knows my tastes and was close to development that this is my next car. Granted hes mostly track side with the car but Im not arguing with him. I wanted "something different". The 911 has been getting softer for years. The 997.2 GT3 is a softer car than my old 996.1 GT3 and that was a way more civilized ride than my old RS. My 993 is currently more extreme than my old RS. I have been waiting for something Porsche puts the GT badge on that's a "game changer". I dont want to be reminded Im driving my 993 - I want something modern quick, modern reliable, modern suspension compliant and modern turn in, balance and handling....Im not a "constant up-grader" and this is my first time new Porsche (possibly my last). Its not to look cool or have the latest. I think any guy in his late 30s to early 40s will appreciate the tech here but also the feeling this car will create. I dont mind trying the e-box, may as well get a head start on that as there will be no manuals in a decade when I next buy another new car I suspect....the great thing is Porsche now make a model for everyone - you can buy a 1963 911, a 1973 RS and 964, 993, 996, 997, 4.0RS....or the new 991 GT3 (and soon RS). See they do cater for everyone!

Yes please post any track reviews when you find some. I understand not for a few weeks as no press cars available for such at this time...

@Macca -- Will do. Agreed. And once one on track review hits, there will likely be a flurry.

Macca, the new Cayman is very much in the mold of the 991, so no reason they can't transfer the engineering of the new GT3 to the Cayman (including the PDK-S). IMO, a Cayman GT3 would be a big hit; it would take some sales away from the 991 GT3, but would also take sales away from non-Porsche rivals. Really, at under $100K US, not much could touch it.

@Manifold -- All great points...which is why Porsche won't do it. The 911 is sacred to management--won't allow the younger brother Cayman surpass it. Not from the factory anyway. Just my opinion.

There was some talk that they might do it. Apparently, the Cayman and 911 don't have large overlap in their target markets. Maybe someone with a Porsche insider contact could ask? Given the choice and my wants (I won't call them 'needs'), I'd take the Cayman GT3 over the 991 GT3.

I think you're right. BTW thanks for posting the link in the first place.

Cayman GT3 will never come. If you want a fast Cayman, try a Ruf 3800S. It's a 981 (Cayman or Boxster, your choice) with the 3.8 flat-6 of the Carrera S and with PDK or 6-speed manual. It delivers 420hp.
