Eduardo: Thanks for your comments, you also make a very valid point! In advance of the upcoming revision, the prospect of a MY 2012 R8 is even more appealing. Keep in mind though cars with ceramics are fewer and carry a 10k option premium.

BFord100: Excellent idea! The majority of these will have been garage queens and the Scuds are great fun for the track.

Mosport track video, 997 GT2 is faster that the R8 GT. I did not drive the R8 in the video, other in car footage I'm driving the GT2.
Not my best video, but that doesn't change the result.

2. Is your GT2 stock? - I have a black one too..2008 CS version
3. I have to agree however that the R8 GT...is something special ..the normal one seems to be hopeless from what I heard..but the gap between the V8 and the V10 must be huger from what I heard. The R8 GT will be more exlusive than then 911 GT3..but its an Audi..I think from performance wise..there wont be a big gap..and the 991 Gt3 isnt proven yet..if I would buy a 991 GT3 I would wait now 1 year anyway...to see what it does on the track..rather then buying a the car "blind"...

917 was a Very good replica, still very cool!
Mosport was run down, fortunately under new ownership and undergoing a Major transformation to a World Class facility. Unfortunately DE fees increasing as well.
I'm sure there's no correlation.
A few changes to the GT2, front lip and rear wing insert off of the GT2 RS, perfect fit. Exhaust, removed Akra muffler replaced with a X pipe. Much better sound and additional power as well. Might change to 200 cel cats this year.
Some Suspension bits, more being done this year, bones and bars.

Re the Audi, V10 is the way to go, same goes for paddle shift vs stick.
Brakes are over boosted but very effective. Did not like the R8 GT, seats suck, worse than in my 996 Turbo. For me it's overpriced under performer, I personally prefer the regular R8V10. Had the pleasure of driving the original in 2010 with an exuberant passenger. My personal preference is the single clutch vs dual especially in the R8. 991 GT3 should be as fast as the outgoing 4.0 RS, which is faster than the R8, IMHO. Fastest car today is the McLaren especially after the chip upgrade to 616hp.... It's a land missile.....

I just picked up a new 2012 R8 V10 6 speed manual. The car is special but not a GT3 RS competitor. It is more refined and easier to drive. I always wanted one but could not justify paying about 130k for the V8 version. I got the v10 at a great price. Great car and can use it everyday. I have quite a few 911's so wanted something different looking. The GT3 is a better track car.

old thread, is eveyone still feeling the same? R8 v10 as a great mixed use car better for street but occasional track day is fine. Thinking about picking one up probably 6 speed manual but not ruling out r-Tron or s-tronic or the r8 gt. That said at the price point I could probably get a 997 turbo s and probably have an even better street car that has a touch more luggage space and faster to boot.

Note: I'm a v10 addict so the 997 turbo s is a little tougher sell even though I know with a tune that car will obliterate an r8.

Obviously a 997 GT3 is on the table too but for the mostly street driving the turbo s makes more sense. I guess a nice mix of all is a 997 GTS or a high spec 991.1 Carrera S

There's basically no car that I'd want to track the way I track my GT3 other than some other Porsche variant. The track record of handling the usage and the community of knowledgeable owners is just too extensive for most other makes to compete with. Obviously Miata or Vette would be fine, but neither has any appeal for me. I couldn't do the things I do with my Porsche in a Ferrari or McLaren and sleep at night. I suppose a BMW or Audi could suffice in a world where Porsche didn't exist, but it would suck.

I'm just wondering what car would be best for the street experience with an occasional track event. I'm leaning r8 v10. I hear you that it's more like an 'and' instead of an 'or' something about a v10 (I know I'm an addict) on backroads tickles up my spine. On the same note something about the 6 cyl high revving GT Series 911.

But I guess a 997 GTS or really a 997 turbo s would probably be the most suitable. If only a 997 gt2 was in the cards as I feel that might check all my boxes...

For me it would be some variation of 911. Which one would depend on my tolerance for stiffness in the ride, whether I wanted manual, cash, etc. If I wanted a DD that I planned to track two or three times a year I'd probably buy a 991S because I like RWD and the 991S can be had with most every creature comfort known to man (which is important in a DD). And of course the S avoids the BS that is the GT car allocation game.

I had a 2014 R8 V10+ 6MT for a couple of years (just traded it).
Note: this was the old R8 which had the manual option so some of this won't be relevant for the newer model.
It was a very good all round car -
- R8 manual looks cool (open gate) but the shift action is actually quite long / imprecise, gearing is quite short though
- R8 sound is great with windows down / convertible but otherwise needs a custom exhaust to be able to hear it. Quite subdued from the cockpit.
- Its pretty heavy, even the plus model was 1570 kg, you can feel this when pushing hard
- My ceramic breaks squeaked like crazy
For me it was no where near as visceral as a GT3 (I previously owned a 997 GT3)

That being said those where my only bad points and I still enjoyed it, the acceleration and torque made it a very fast car to drive.
