Coil pack replacement interval
Searching provided poor results, so apologies if I missed a good thread but I was wondering what sort of interval people are choosing for coil pack replacement. Searching in general seems to suggest replace all at the first failure, but a friend replaces his quite frequently. I’m interested in the consensus here.

It would be interesting to know how far people have gone without replacing them. In my GT3, I've not replaced them and now have a bit over 23,000 miles (6-1/2 years old)

They certainly do fail, I had to have one replaced under warranty, but I wouldn't think to the point that you change them that often. I had over 38K on the car and only had the one issue.

There is no scheduled replacement interval, afaik. Changing them every 12k seems like overkill to me (if they’ve been working great for 12k, I might trust them more than untested ones new in a box).

I dont believe coils are part of the cars recommended maintenance schedule so I wouldn't do it unless it fails or error codes indicate an ignition issue even after replacing the plugs... Seems like a waste of money to me but if I helps you sleep at night can't hurt.

On my earlier 981BS there was no coil pack heat shield from the factory. Failed coil spoiled a road trip once. From that point on I started changing coils with plugs on that car. However on my 991 GT3 the coils seem pretty well shielded, so I will probably only change the coils either when one fails or after some rather long time like 10 years.
Just like with 981BS, the 991 GT3 takes coils from Beru, so preventative replacement would not cost much.

981s don't have heat shields. Adding the 911 heat shield is highly recommended for aggressive driving and a must for the track. As stated coil packs are not a maintenance item so without a symptom or visual crack replacing is not needed. If you chose to replace there is no additional labor as part of a spark plug change.
