Quick update on the discussion of the G6 motor vs the G0. I took my car in for an oil change after the 1000 mile break in. The tech warned me that when he went to install the oil filter it did not fit. He gave me the new part # since he knows I like to change my own oil. The part # was 0PB-115-351. He mentioned it is the one used on the 4.0 motor. Maybe the RS motor? Some evidence that the G6 engine is actually different from the F series.

The 1st Gen RS Motor is widely identical to the 3.8 with model year 2016 (G). Thats why the oil filter is different from the former 3.8 engines.

I’ll be in the market for a 991 GT3 next year. The difference between the .1 & .2 is something that I don’t feel I could stomach. With that being the case how would one search for .1s that have had the engine replacement or should one purchase a .1 in ‘23 & just drive the hell outta it hoping the engine fails before 7/24?

The Carfax won't tell you anything and most dealers (including Porsche salespeople) don't know anything about this. The service department at the Porsche dealers can look up whether the G6 swap has been done if you give them the VIN. I messaged a number of dealers about cars for sale and then communicated with those that responded that the cars they had for sale were cars with G6. I paid a little more than I would have been willing to pay for a car with an F motor for sure but at least I know where I stand. I also ended up buying a 2014 with the warranty expiring in 8/2024 - would have preferred a 2015 but I am happy with my car and with the G6 hopefully the warranty won't be needed.

I guess when the time comes I can compile a list of VIN numbers from cars that I’m interested in & contact dealerships to see if the G6 swap has taken place.

If you do a PPI it’s pretty simple to see the serial number just took off the oil pan protector.

No right or wrong perspective re the .1 engine issue but I ‘couldn’t stomach’ of probability of failure of the .1 engine.

To early to tell where the market will be for the .1 in 2023. But if you are looking at a car that has the warranty expiring in 7/24, that would be a 2014, right? Maybe the engine issue will be priced in the 2014’s by mid 2023?

Thanks. I was under the assumption that the ‘14s & ‘15s replacement warranty would expire in ‘24. Didn’t even stop to realize that the 10 year warranty for the ‘15s would be ‘25. Thanks for pointing that out.

It's 10 years from the in-service date of the specific vehicle. My 2015 was delivered in 11/14, so 11/24 is my end date for the motor warranty.

This is an awesome thread and needs to be stickied. Thread title should be changed to ".1 GT3s with new G6 engine replacement roll call" or something.

As @TinyPP suggested earlier, owners that responded in this thread with the new G6 serial numbers should be compiled into the first page and include the date when you got the G6 swap and fill out the following:
  • Year of Manufacture
  • Original engine serial #
  • Replacement(s) engine serial #
  • Mileage
  • Track/No Track use
  • US vs International
  • Cam & FF catastrophic failure (Y/N)
  • Other

I'm hoping i can contribute and add my info into this thread as i've been able to constantly reproduce the same 'reduced engine performance possible to drive on' message over and over at high rpm.

I spoke to a buddy of mine yesterday that works for Porsche North Houston to ask him if the certified preowned GT3s that they get have had the engine replaced. He told me that some of the ‘14s & ‘15s had the engine replacement done at port without being recorded. My plan is to go about it the way you guys have been suggesting. Have the serial number checked to verify if it’s been replaced with the G6 designation & if not I’ll have to make the determination on taking that risk or upping my budget for a ‘16 or .2.

The very nice salesman at PNH had no understanding of the engine replacement to G6 issue - he kept going back to the original replacements from E to F - he was sure that if that was done the engine should be fine - not so! - I almost bought a car that was CPO from them but I couldn't figure out if the cars there had G6 replacements or not so I passed. In hindsight I should've had the salesman hand me off to the service department who probably could have actually answered the question. I don't fault the salesman, we don't know what we don't know - but he did kind of gloss over my question and in the end I purchased elsewhere and don't have the CPO warranty which I would really like to have.

He knew exactly what I was referring to. I would prefer to buy from North Houston. If they have one that I’m interested in when the time comes I’ll have their service department check out the block for the serial number like you said you wish you would’ve done.

I agree - the sales guy was great and I am sure they are an outstanding dealership.

on the other hand when I reached out to the dealer that sold me my car he replied right away with “we already checked, it has the G6” and a photo. They shipped cars both ways and it was as seamless as possible. So no regrets for me in the end - but if they had a G6 car with CPO at PNH I would have bought it probably - I just didn’t push hard enough to get the answer I needed which is on me

My car had the engine replaced at about 12,000 miles in 2018 - the last owner drove the car a bit more as it now has 22,000 miles. I don't know for sure that it was never tracked but my buddy and I went over it on his lift and there is no evidence whatsoever of track time - it's crazy clean for an 8 year old car with as many miles as it has. I probably overpaid relative to the market but I got a really nice example with the G6 so I'm happy.
