991.1 gt3 smoke
So went for normal 30 minute drive a few hours ago. Had car parked in driveway, and upon normal start up lots of smoke out the pipe. I immediately shut down. I waited a couple minutes and restarted, smoke again visible through rear window. I let it run and in about 20 seconds it went away. WTF??? I'm half way through tank of gas, so doubt it's gas. Oil level is in range with no additions made recently. I'm getting no reading of failure in the message center. Also while revving and idling, no strange noises. I know about these having potentially failing engines, but all I have read said they really let go. I don't know if I should try and drive, or tow to the Porsche dealer. Thoughts???

One of the great mysteries of the .1 GT3 start up: the WTF cloud of smoke. I've heard a lot of theories as to why it occurs but it seems pretty random to me and I've never been able to make it happen regardless of my shut down procedure. I don't believe it's anything to worry about. Now if you headed down the road putting up a smokescreen it's probably time to worry.

Happens to me only if I park the car after only running it for a few minutes.
For example, if I pull the car into the driveway to wash it and then move it back to its spot and let it sit. Next time I drive it I’ll get smoke.
My suggestion is to limit short drives where the engine hasn’t fully warmed up. Though in your example you said you drove it for 30 mins so I’m not sure.

My 997.2 TTS does the smoke every once in a while but my 991.1 GT3RS never has.
I can speculate it's small amount of oil that has crept into the combustion chamber.
See if it does it again my guess is it won't .

My original F engine smoked occasionally on startup, never pinned any cause. New G6 engine has never smoked. Not sure if there is any correlation, but that's what I have experienced.

When I first got my 991.1 GT3 (G6 engine), it smoked a lot on start up. Lots of grey smoke. I shortly after took it for a major service and have driven around 1000 miles per month since. In 6 months I've driven the car more than the previous owner managed in 2 years and the issue hasn't returned. The key is to drive these cars regularly, they don't like sitting around.

Mine does it all the time. I took it in and they checked out, no issues. Was told to rev up the motor before shutting it off. I do that and it still happens. Seems like I have to add 100 ml every few weeks to keep it at the 3rd bar.

My .1 will be down 1 to 2 bars of oil after every track day. This is a known condition of this motor AFAIK. The .2s don't use as much and the replacement motors seem to burn less as well based on comments from guys that have them. Strart up smoke doesn't mean you have an internal leak. Plus I would argue the last thing you would want to do with an original E-F-G motor that may have an issue is try to get it fixed. The endgame here is to get a replacement motor.
