I test drove a 718 GT4 6MT and was very unimpressed by the experience. It was sorely lacking in acceleration, drama, and sound when compared to my GT3.
Has anyone else had a similar experience? From what I’ve read, many claim it’s better than a GT3
EDITED: Added my homemade table which shows how much the gearing affects the torque to the road. Coupled with the difference in torque between the two (roughly 30ft-lbs at peak torque), it shouldnt have been surprising that the engine felt slow compared to the GT3.
I thought the smaller footprint and lower powerband you could just wring it out over and over made it seem like one of the best street cars I’ve ever driven. If you didn’t know what you were sitting in and thought it was a 911....I mean that would be one of the greatest 911’s ever made
I would def say more fun on an autocross course which translates to street driving fairly well compared to racetracks
Being that is slightly more mid engined then the street 911's, on paper it certainly has a driving dynamics advantage. If Porsche put their front line engines in it they might out pace the GT3 but they don't so its an academic discussion. Personally I do like the way the GT4 looks but it is way too under powered for me to consider.
I was disappointed by the 981 GT4 and thought Porsche would make substantial improvements to the 718 GT4, better track, multilink rear suspension, shorter gears and PDK on release, more responsive engine and the dead cat didn't bounce.
The way the Cayman is currently set up (size geometry suspension) - the sweet spot is still the 981 GTS with LSD and factory lowered suspension - 3.4L sounds great and just a fun, nimble all round car with 335HP - works well. Still have one. I suspect the 718 GTS 4 is the sweet spot of 718 range too. I certainly remember lots of GT4 owners with long faces at quite a few tracks - e.g. getting pantsed by basic track set up Caymans.
I'm skeptical in regard to the GT4 RS - I suspect its going to be little more than a body kit car - who knows, would be nice if they knocked it out the park.
Certainly nowhere near the GT3/RS in performance and the handling difference between the RS and GT4, particularly at pace, is massive.
There's more to cars than speed. The GT4 is a great driving experience.
Compared to what? Its a fair question - compared to a GT3, or a RS or a 600LT it isn't. It should have been, could have been.......... but isn't. Try a Lotus 430 Cup against a 718 GT4 manual..............the Lotus kicks the GT4 to touch and then some.
For me, on street, even gt4 damn near over powered. I keep dropping my power threshold for street before it's just not fun unless on a circuit. More and more, I'll take a nimble underpowered, good sounding/feeling car on street that I can wring out. I can't wring out a 500hp car on street; AT ALL.

........................................and thats why, on the street, I drive a 981 GTS most of the time Its more fun more of the time.

What an absurd discussion. Compared to anything you want. Just because something is better than something doesn't mean that thing isn't good, it's just different. Comparing a GT4 to an RS is asinine.

OK - just different, I posed a fair question - I'll give you a straight answer based on the flavour of your response - the GT4 is a turd in comparison to a RS, GT3 and 600LT. Happy now?
Try a Lotus 430 Cup as I suggested.....thats a fair comparison and the GT4 loses that one as well.
Thats why I said compared to what...........how about you tell me what you think is sexy about the 981/718 GT4 and what's a fair comparison. Toyota Supra perhaps?

after many years and many cars, I have come to the same conclusion. I found my GT4 still to be overpowered for the street. my 19 RS was even more so (and that car was too expensive for me to track, so I gave it up).
GT3 will always be superior from the factory. The engine, transmission, etc. No way Porsche will let you have the GT3 experience for $50k less.... That being said, my 981 GT4 has been fun and I love tracking it, but compared to a GT3, it gets blown away by it. The engineering that goes into the GT3 and RS, its not even close. Why do you think Porsche went to the trouble of making a totally different 4.0L for the 718 GT4 when they had a proven 4.0L in production already?
If you had the GT3 experience, GT4 is a bit disappointing. From a regular Cayman or Carrera experience to a GT4 is a big step up.
