991.2 Last of the True Analogs?
Apologies if this has been asked / discussed already but does anyone here think that the 991.2 GT cars will be recognized as the last of the true analog GT's?
The 992's interior is riddled with digital gauge clusters, displays, and electronics.
Just me? Any thoughts or opinions?

Not the first time I've heard this, but I'll say that the 991.2 GT3 doesn't feel all that "analog" to me. I love it but I wouldn't describe it that way. It's loaded with electronics - ABS, traction, nannies, sport button w/ rev match, etc. I enjoy that stuff don't get me wrong but I wouldn't call it analog.

Yeah, the .2 engine is old school in some aspects, but the car is not analog like an air cooled Porsche. Closest of the water cooled era to analog air cooled would be the 996 GT3 and RS. Porsche started “technofying” with the 997 IMO. Also the dimensions of the 996 were more modest along with wheel diameter and aero. I think my .2 is a great Porsche but its connection to the analog, elemental, air cooled era is strictly sentimental.

Just because a car has better interior tech doesn't mean its an inferior drivers car. It sounds like they are keeping the same engine and weight for the 992 and still offering a manual. Its basically a 991.2 with a better interior and improved front suspension... i dont see how that would make it less analog.
similar story with the GT4. the new one is basically the same recipe as the old one.

Yeah, should have clarified. In no way am I saying that the 991 is analog in comparison to earlier iterations of the 911. I think it's primarily the digital tach that's bugging me in the 992's.

I’m a fan of the 991 I’m on #5, and I agree it’s not a analog car with all the tech for sure. I’ve always love the gauges on the 911, and the 992 for me misses that for me personally.

The real last analog 911 was the 1973. It even had an analog computer inside the Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection pump (reads a space cam like a record player with a needle - now that’s analog ).
Cars after this had electronic field injection (Digital computer)...

Don't think the 992 GT cars will be any less "analog" vs the 991. It might even improve on road feel and directness given the substantive suspension changes with the double wishbone in front.

My 73S was a lot of fun to drive. However, if had to choose between it and my current .2 it would be the .2 by a long shot.

I'm going to bite and agree with you, OP. I moved on buying a 991.2 GT3 for generally the concept (though perhaps not the precise words) you're using. Namely:
- It seems likely environmental law will challenge future 'GT3-like' vehicles, at least gas-powered ones
- Key attributes being low weight, high-rev. NA power, 'mechanical feeling' human interface design and a manual trans., among others
- I find the retro-futuristic style of the 992 subjectively 'less pure/simple' than the 991.2 aesthetic, inside and out
- Versus the 991.1, the 991.2 infuses more 'race DNA' in the engine (Cup Car derivative) and with small bits like comparatively less insulation
- Etc.

When the 994 comes out, people will say "the 992 felt so raw and connected to the road". This debate seems to come up with every new generation of car.

At a very very young age I can claim I was in a car that had an eight track and another with a three on the tree. I can also vividly remember sitting scrunched next to my brother (in the same seat) in our fathers '67 split window coupe 427 manual w/ side pipes. That's my best memory of an analog car and my poor brother will forever where the badge as a result of his leg unfortunately making contact with the exhaust. Nevertheless, aside from the standard automotive definitions, these cars are generational. Some will naturally like the old, new and everywhere in between. It is rare that a next model 911 isn't a step up, whether someone enjoys it comparatively is always subjective. I will not claim my RS is analog, however, it is one of the best driving cars I have owned. It provides a connected sensation and a parallel in my mind of what an older analog car would be like with a modern chassis, suspension and reliability that one would anticipate from a newer automobile.
