Default Satin platinum wheel cleaning

Love the satin platinum wheels but the satin finish lets brake dust cling to the wheels. It's defiantly more of a pain to clean vs the standard wheel. Recently my dealer sprayed tire-shine all over dirty wheels at my last service and I'm still scrubbing filthy spots weeks later.

I was think of putting a gloss finish over the satin. Has anyone tried it? Or has a trick for cleaning?

I use Griot's Garage Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner...I have found it to be very effective.

I would recommend cleaning your wheels with:

Clean with this:
Amazon Amazon

Protect with this:
Amazon Amazon

Do not allow dealer or anyone else to use cheap chemicals on your car... otherwise you will see things discolor. Seen it many times already on this forum.

I hate this company, but I swear by this one product for my cars that don't have pccb:
https://www.amazon.com/Armor-All-Outlast-Repellant-Aerosol/dp/B01LWQ1GAC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VC3P015VYGMC&dchild=1&keywords=brake+dust+repellent&qid=1594248393&s=automotive&sprefix=brake+dust+repe%2Cautomotive%2C217&sr=1-1 https://www.amazon.com/Armor-All-Outlast-Repellant-Aerosol/dp/B01LWQ1GAC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1VC3P015VYGMC&dchild=1&keywords=brake+dust+repellent&qid=1594248393&s=automotive&sprefix=brake+dust+repe%2Cautomotive%2C217&sr=1-1

it will help keep the wheels from getting dirty, and when they do, removing brake dust can be done with pretty much just a rinse. I ran a track day in my nsx with carbotech pads (which dust a lot on track) - next day, the dust just fell off while I was rinsing the wheels.

no other armorall products are allowed to live in my garage, but this stuff truly works.

I'd recommend coating your wheels. If you not sure how to apply coating, you could probably have them done by a local detail shop for around $75/wheel and would dramatically cut down on cleaning time and effort.

I used GTechniq CSL + EXO combo and cuts down cleaning time in 1/2.

First washing of wheels got BlackFire Si02 coating on them and now they simply just hose off to clean

- I have standard brakes with satin wheels that do generate a bunch of dust

I second (or third) the ceramic coating suggestions. Have the satin platinum wheels which are the most beautiful finish ever but they stain really easily and are a bugger to keep looking sharp. After ceramic coating (do the barrels too they will prob just quote you to the outer lip) the dirt/dust will just rinse off.

Will it stand up to high temp track usage? I’d hate to spend the $$ and get them burned off after one track day...

I just did the coating on my platinum finished wheels last night for the exact same reason. I cleaned the wheels and then used Gyeon PREP to insure a good clean surface. I then used a microfiber cloth and applied Gyeon CANCOAT Quartz coating on the entire wheel exterior. I did two coats to each wheel and let it cure overnight. Looks very sharp this morning for sure.I am going to apply a final top coat of Gyeon CURE to help the finish and eliminate water spots per the manufacturers instructions. Once I pull the wheels, I will apply the same process to the interior wheel barrel areas.
Good Luck,

Tom in Reno

Question about using those products on the interior of the wheel barrel.... won't that affect the sticking of the weights? Seems like asking for trouble to use the product there.

Thanks for the info and I'll look into it before I jump. Finishing the wheel insides is the last worry of mine as this is a daily driver not a show car for weekend events.

I have Satin Aluminum but also have PCCBs- no dust period. I also coated them w/ Modesta. They make a product specifically for coating wheels.

If I did not have PCCBs I would of just gotten Satin Black/Platinum finish.

You have Satin Platinum so if they are dirty they look Black so should not really be an issue no??

I have ALL Platinum wheel faces, NO black. Brake dust doesn't show up too bad as I try to keep it clean during the week. This coating will just make cleaning a bit easier.
Thanks,

Thats why you apply it after the wheels have been balanced.
