Great pic and really puts the size in perspective. Looks like suave big bro next to his feisty little brother.
There really is no good reason for the huge growth of the 911 - it's still a sports car for 2 people. I guess some of the added girth is useful in a collision, otherwise all downsides. Would love to return to the air-cooled size.
The color's cool and all but the real "looker" is the size of the new cars!
Indeed.

The size and fishbowl-ness of the aircooled can't be beat. More dangerous, sure. More fun, for sure.

I thought the larger footprint was also for a longer and wider wheel base(plus to accommodate larger wheels) to improve higher speed stability/handling. There is no way they could achieve the performance numbers today on the smaller footprint.
Great pic, and here I was expecting a bigger color variance in the two Mexicos...looks like they're pretty close, actually. At least in this light?
Your photo reminds me of one I took a few years ago when moving cars around. No question the 911 has grown, and a lot. But you see it in Porsche's other platforms, too. I just sort of "saw" this while switching two mid-engined cars around one day and was struck by the size differential. First shots I took were more GT4 in the foreground, which made it look even bigger. Tried to balance the perspective, and came up with this...
But then I look at this image, shot by Larry Chen for Issue 002, and…hmm...that 924 isn't all that much newer than the 914—just 6-7 years if we are talking platform to platform. But it's decades older than the 981...
The mind blower? The 991 shares its wheelbase with…the 1970 914, which is a tiny car. It just has a "bit" more overhang.
