I like the looks of the 996.1 GT3 plenty, the tucked in wheels, skirts, and that rear spoiler look great, not sure why the author feels so much differently!

There isn't going to be a new GT3 model until well after the 20th Anniversary of the GT is over. So, gonna have to wait for 25th (which also coincides with 60th Anniversary of the 911).

Supposed to be a ~450hp 25th Anniversary Boxster coming too (late 2021?)...

Maybe I'm a bit biased but I don't really agree with the criticism of the 996 design whether inside or out, it still looks the part to me even now at 20 years old.
It is different in many ways to the new one as would be expected from that time period, but it's always a real hoot to drive whether on the road or track. Mine has a K400 Manthey upgrade kit fitted, which includes 400hp, uprated brakes and suspension basically tuned for the track. I haven't had a decent high speed drive in the new RS as yet, but the basic and raw seat of your pants experience I get in the 996 will be hard to beat. The 996 engine revving from 7k to 8k is pretty epic sounding, so really looking forward to getting the RS up to the magical 9k revs at some point, I hear this is also supposed to be an epic sound.
So far I'm really liking the new RS, it's pretty clear the performance will be on a higher level to the 996 and probably too fast for the road in reality, but still looking forward to a good blast on a windy deserted Scottish road some time when the weather here improves a bit.

996.1 GT3 only revs to 7,600 rpm, right? Does the K400 package change this?

Actually you are correct in theory, but the rev limiter is set just above 8K. Even though I don't make a habit of going that high I have done it as it can be quite easy to do in low gears, it just seems to get very lively above 7K.
