Default Center Lock Bolts - Tear Down and Clean

I want to tear down and clean my Center Lock Bolts. I have already gotten the guts out by hitting the bolt on a stack of magazines. The question I have is what is everyone using to clean out the nasty Castrol Molub Paste? Any grease remover, mineral spirits, citrus cleaner? Any ideas, suggestions on how best to take on this messy project? Thanks.

I just use WD-40 as it is an excellent solvent that is safe and easy on the parts. You need lots of paper towels. I do mine once a year and always clean and reapply the paste on the mating surfaces with every wheel change.

One more piece of advice NEVER EVER use CITRUS based cleaners on your parts as it will damage your anodization on those aluminum parts.

Does it make any difference which Castrol Molub Alloy you use either the 860/220-2 or 860/150-2

Quite a big difference in thickness between those:

I'm not sure which one this is (supposedly the one used by Porsche):

That price is much better - same stuff that Porsche uses?

I will second this. I bought 2 tins. Should last a lifetime. It looks like it’s repackaged into tins with a white label. I asked lots of questions and they confirmed this is the legit product and that they sell this product to many US Porsche owners.

Just a related thought- when you pull the splined lock piece, check for corrosion behind there. Swapping wheels on a friend's RS we noticed a lot of rust behind the lock. cleaned it up with wd40.

The easiest way to release the nut internals is to slam the nut down hard on a soft piece of wood or magazine. Grease according to these docs.

Well, got the CLs cleaned. SmokingGTS, thanks for the recommendation of using WD40 - worked well! Still, what a PITA. SmokingGTS, don't know how you are able to do this every year. That Molub paste is nasty and gets everywhere.

Any special way to reassemble, especially regarding the circlip? Circlip goes around the cone ring and then into the nut, correct?

I use very small flat blade screwdrivers to get the ring in. Secure the middle of the ring in the groove first and then work it forward to the open ends. Use your screwdrivers to push the ends into the groove. As I said you will need lots of paper towels and nitrile gloves.

Thanks.

No paste on the circlip and no paste in the cone ring groove where the circlip resides, correct?
