that I understand - 4.0 motor with 9k redline. Yes. Different animal all together.

but what's the issue compared to a NA 3.8 with the same redline - that is what the OP I quoted was comparing to

There is a very nice graph which I have referenced in the past (but cannot find at the moment), showing the torque curve of similarly horse powered NA vs turbo engine. The turbos have more low-end torque and hit their apex earlier (around 6,000 I believe, but don't quote me on that). The NA engines do not have the low-end torque but they build and build up to about 8,000. The sound of the engine as it crescendos in an NA (be it 3.4, 3.8 or 4.0) is something else again. Different strokes for different folks. No right answer.

It’s all about the sound.

interesting. here is a side by side video.
this is my 997 3.8 with straight pipes - NO mufflers - no side cans, no center can compared to my 3.0 Turbo with cat bypass pipes. I am planning to run headers and straight pipes on the 3.0 next - to see how that sounds. I can get even better sound out of it...

Rarity and collectibility are not the same thing. Is it more collectible than a base 911? I sure think so and I wouldn't mind adding one to the stable, but not over a GT series car. I believe it's too mechanically similar to the regular/base 911 range to trump any of the NA GT-series cars for collectibility, though it will definitely be more collectible than a base or S, especially if manual-equipped.

Yep. And there is also the turbo lag. To me, anyway, driving a 911 with a naturally aspirated engine versus a turbo engine is a very different driving experience in terms of throttle response (turbo lag), sound and power delivery.

Have you driven a 991 turbo? If my TTS has any turbo lag I have not felt it. The response is immediate when you stomp on it. I still prefer the sound and feel from my RS but as far as turbo lag it’s not like the older cars. When I drive my dads 996 GT2 I definitely feel the turbo lag there. It’s like wait wait and boost, not on the new cars.

jp884 - I have. A 991.1 turbo S. Definitely felt a subtle lag. I hit the gas, brief lag - rocket launch. I have not driven pre-991 turbos, so I cannot opine on the difference in lag between the 991 turbo and previous generations. I am sure that Porsche is making it less and less perceptible with the newer generation of cars.

That they are, can’t wait to see what the 992 gen is going to feel like. Every gen it’s like how can they possibly improve and yet they always do

I agree. They sound like 3.8L Buick Grand Nationals from 1984. "Woosh !!!!, pop pop pop...."

991.1 and 991.2 911 turbo and 991.2 carrera turbo all have very noticeable lag. Driven all three extensively. Much better than older Porsche turbos but major lag compared to the knife edge response of a GT3. No offense jp884 but it kinda surprises me you don’t notice it on your TTS.

The only lag free turbo car is the 488/pista. No other manufacturer has truly solved turbo lag. Every turbo from MB, BMW, Porsche, Mclaren, etc. annoys me with their turbo lag, even though all those cars have less lag than turbos of a decade or more ago.

I do like the GNX. A friend had one back in the day and with some mods it’s was insane. (And weighed about a GT3). And I liked the syclone and typhoon and I am not opposed to turbo, as I am a big diesel guy, but the fake pops are a bit much.

I have not driven a 991.2 turbo or turbo S but I hear turbo lag is minimal. I actually sort of like turbo lag, especially if it is pronounced at low rpm and negligible at high rpm. Who has a 997.1 turbo cab 6MT for me to fill the speedster void? They are so far out of warranty and inexpensive enough that I would do the ruf 735ps mods.
