Just got word today that a friends 991.2 GT3RS engine failed today. Just over 500 miles the oil light came on during a simple freeway commute to work. Within seconds engine rattle. Hope to hear from the dealer tomorrow. Stay tuned

I think u worry too much
is this your first porsche?
I have had everything they made since 1970. they ALL have prob
stuff blow up
clutch
tranny
engine
its not just 991.1RS
I even fell into my own garage last weekend and almost broke my elbow.
just buy the car and drive it
when it blows, then deal with it.

Did your friend receive a new or reconditioned engine and did Porsche offer anything else?

Maybe another leaking oil tank.

The engine issue I am aware of is the consumption of a huge amount of oil, and Porsche simply replacing the engine with no word as to the actual fault. On the transmission, its been a mixture of fluids resulting in gearbox changes - again with no proper explanation from Porsche.
From the posts here, there are more cars than the ones I knew about. So it would be very interesting to hear if anyone else has suffered similar problems and what response they got from Porsche. Unfortunately, I own one of the cars. No, this is not my first Porsche, and yes everything with more than one part will eventually have an issue. I am simply trying to understand how widespread the issue is and the satisfaction levels of Porsche's response.

Got my engine changed on my 991.1 GT3 RS at ~11'000km due to excessive oil consumption. Engine had this oil consumption from day 1 (1.5 to 2 liters for a morning of track use) but it took me almost a year to convince Porsche to look into it.
I understand that such issue can happen but it seems there are at least 2 or 3 similar cases I'm aware of and what worries me is if I would not have driven my car very hard on track for 10'000km Porsche would not have looked into it and I would have discovered the real issue once warranty has expired and this is not fair because Porsche is well aware of the issue now.

And to be accurate, I got a RECONDITIONED engine... not a brand new one, PAG didn't want to although I I fought for it pretty hard. I also didn't get any explanation on the failure.

Correct, the 991.1 GT3 will go through history as the only GT3 engine that did not compete in Motorsports, their used prices are rapidly approaching 997.2 GT3 prices.
The 911R and 991.1 GT3 RS engines are present in the Motorsports 2016/2017/2018 GT3 R (the $500k factory race car that occasionally can keep up with the RSR and obliterates any GT3 Cup). For 2019 the GT3 R is switching to the 991.2 GT3 RS engine.

Hope to get more news today but the man is understandedly disappointed and doesn't want to waste time speculating what happened. There's a reason a spare quart of oil is included with the car? Hell, I carry 4 quarts to be sure. Getting ready for a 280 mile trip up the coast and will check oil level every 50 miles. LOL! I'm with Mooty from a standpoint of alarm. Sometimes $hit happens and Porsche most always provides remedy. Drive the car as it was meant to be driven!

Update
The engine has indeed failed, having spun one or more bearings at 576 miles. Copper particles detected in the oil. I am told the dealer and Porsche folks are shocked this happened. Now waiting to see what PAG will do about it. I suspect new, non-number matching engine rather replace the whole car? Not sure that I would be content with a non-matching numbers on a car like this.
I am happy to report that at 570 miles, my engine has used very little oil (if any), and my trip to and from Paso Robles produced 19.6 MPG with an average speed 67 MPH.
