Tint Not Recommended on the Rear Three Windows on .2 GT3RS?
Hi fellow Rennlisters! First time poster, long time lurker! Thank you guys for all the help so far! I did a quick search for this topic and didn't see anything related but apologize if this has been discussed before. I currently have a .2 GT3RS over at Protective Film Solutions in CA for PPF, ceramic coating, and tint work. However, they just called and said that since the rear three windows are plexi-glass (Gorilla Glass), they cannot be tinted like normal glass windows and would not recommend applying it to them as it bonds differently. If they ever needed to remove it, it would tear into many smaller pieces. They mentioned this also applies to the GT2RS. They would be using Xpel XR Plus IR window tint. PFS sent me photos of what a 50% tint on only the front three windows of a GT2RS they finished would look like with the rear three windows untouched. They recommended doing 70% for fronts (max 50%). Has anyone had any issues with tinting the rear windows or been advised similarly?
Does anyone have any more info on this? Running into the same issue with my incoming 3RS.
A local shop was able to tint the gorilla glass for me. They put an anti-blister layer first and the applied the tint layer on top of that. No issues and it looks great! Finding a shop that’s willing to do it is the tough part.
Talked to my tint guy about this. Apparently because the glass is so smooth, it is initially not sticky but when it dries it "hyperadheres." Installation is more time consuming, and removal is more difficult.
As long as you never intend to remove it there is no issue.
Apparently there is a low tack film coming out specifically designed for GG. Did not get a timeline on that.

i had ceramic tint applied and had it removed after a few months once I noticed there were stark marks between the film and window. No problem removing the film whatsoever

Good to know. I think GG in cars is so new the Industry is just trying to figure it out.
I have done it on my GT3RS.2 on the rear and side . The dealer did not recommend this but went to reputed tint installers and they were able to do it and have already done this several times .
Would I have a problem ? Maybe , because when I track the car and I go to wash it after finishing , I have noticed that there is a lot of vapor coming out of the rear side ( at the end of the rear window ) . That means that the engine heat might affect the tint on the polycarbonate - gorilla glass in that area and that’s why some cars probably will have tint issues .
i have done it 2 months ago and have not seen any change or any effect from this on the tint so far

Good to hear! Here in south Florida tints are a must.
