991.2 GT3 Spec - Minor Lessons learned - cost savings to be had
hello all - as you may or may not know I'm over the moon about my new Sapphire Blue 2018 911 GT3 - it's a really wonderful car and I can't say enough good things about it. However after my 1st track day I have already learned things about spec'ing a track car from Porsche that can save some minor (not sarcastic) $$$

- don't spec the $730 (CSX) carbon fibre window triangles - due to extreme wind buffeting above 160 kph you will be purchasing some of these https://www.awe-tuning.com/awe-tunin...-wind-diffuser - these replace/cover (don't have them yet but I'll let you know) the wonderful OEM carbon fiber window triangles - you can hear the buffeting starting at 0:07 in this video of the car at thunder hill -
- I have equipped the car with a VBox HD2 video recording system - so far I'm very pleased - but tying into the Porsche CAN bus has proven difficult - and I purchased some un-necessary parts: the OBDII Can Cable (RLCAB069 - $130 - https://www.vboxmotorsport.com/store...&product_id=83) and the Clip on CAN Bus Cable (RLACS182 - $200 - https://www.vboxmotorsport.com/store...product_id=102) will not work on a Porsche 991.2 - also you might benefit from a CAN bus extension cable that isn't listed on the website (RLCAB027-3 $160) - the can bus extension cable comes in 1 and 3 meter lengths - contact customer support for VBox I found them prompt and helpful.

Thanks for the tips! I’ll see you out there at some point soon (still putting the break-in miles on mine).

Thanks for this info! Reminded me that I needed to change my configuration and remove those stock carbon triangles. Ordered the GMG ones. And won't have the car until November likely. SMH.

ODBII solutions Bluetooth or other wise won’t work - you have to splice the can bus wires and use the unterminated can bus harness available from the VBOX website - depending on where you splice and where you place theVBox unit you may it may not need the extension cable. I’ll post more when we get the splice taken care of.

The lack of can bus data can be seen in the above video in that there in no brake/throttle info or RPM data - the speed and lap time info is all coming from the VBox’s own sensors!
if anyone has information on how to tie a VBOX system into a 991.2 please let me know! Thanks

From the video, it looks like you should probably be using the upper pass-throughs in the seats, BTW. Your belts are pivoting under the center plastic divider and then going up and over your shoulders.

happy to report that the GMG Carbon Fibre window triangles have solved my wind buffeting problem - easy to install and they work - and they retain the factory CF "look" so win win all around - quite a bit cheaper than the OEM options so I recommend not specing OEM CF window triangles and just buy/swap for the GMG ones…
on the plus side I have some lightly used CF OEM window triangles for sale if anyone wants to update the "look" of their 991.2 car - I'm going to guess they will fit nearly any 991.x car, but since I'm not on expert I can't say for sure. PM me an offer and I'll be happy to ship them to you!

Learned something today - as you all know I replaced the egregiously expensive Porsche OEM Carbon Fiber windows triangles with the GMG CF window triangles for wind buffeting mitigation - the GMG triangles work great, but I was left with a conundrum as to what to do with the now defunct $700 Porsche CF window triangles - since I'm guessing the used market on these is limited!
solution! they are a perfect fit for my Wife's 2015 Boxster S - so boom! upgrade! I'm guessing the 981, 718, 991.x all share the same part fitment and these front window triangles are completely swappable - try at your own risk but I can say for sure a 991.2 GT3 window Triangle fits on a 2015 Boxster S
woot!
move along -nothing to see here!
