Comparison of 991.2 GT3 with 997.2 GT3 anyone?
Anyone taken delivery of a 991.2 GT3 manual that owned a 997.2 GT3? I have heard about the very different clutch feel on the new car but I have not seen much else in terms of comparison. Rear wheel steering, higher revving engine, obviously more power make it a lot different, what about steering feel? I had a 997.2 GT3 for five years, tracked it, loved it, trouble free, someone really wanted it so sold it. Really curious about how different a feel there is between the two cars. 7/8 years between the two models is a lot, I am assuming that they are worlds apart. Can't wait for mine.... (apologies if this has been thoroughly addressed elsewhere, could not find too much doing a search)

I'm coming from a 997 Gt3 as well so also interested to see what the fuss is about personally. I've a 50th in manual but it doesn't have the same buzz the gt3 has. Haven't driven an R.
I have an image of a Car as planted and confidence inspiring as the gen 1 gt3 / RS with the 4.0 met engine and easy clutch of the gt4. Maybe dreaming to much.

I have a 997.1 GT3 RS, a 991 GT3 RS and a 991.2 GT3. I've tracked my 997.1 RS in the past and my 991.1 GT3 (now gone and replaced with the 991.2 GT3). Completely different cars on the track. The 991 GT3 makes me think I'm a better driver. The 997.1 takes more effort.

I have test drove both, so not a true in-depth comparison. The 997.2 was smaller, less refined inside, and raw. It felt to me like a dedicated track car. I could not see myself putting 10,000 street miles on the car. It almost felt like i was too old for that car, as it was intended for someone in their 20’s or 30’s. The clutch was super heavy. It had good power, but the front end seemed to walk around a lot. I got out of it and felt it just wasn’t for me, because i wasn’t looking for a dedicated track/race car,
The 991.2 strips a lot of that rawness away, but it leaves just enough. It is a little bigger, much more polished inside, and has a bad attitude when you fire it up. I can see myself driving it on the street, but it is louder in every way from the 991.1. It is closer to the 997 in this regard. Performance wise, no comparison to the 997. Multiple levels faster. The clutch is much lighter. The manual is better. The ride is better.
What the 991.2 gives up in rawness it more than gets back with badness. Where the 991.1 is almost a cross between a GT3 and a Turbo, the 991.2 with the manual is more a true descendant of the 997.2 GT3. Both the 991’s are awesome cars, it just depends on what you like. I personally think the .1 is a prettier car, and it is definitely more low-key. It is more a work of art than the .2 imo. The .2 is just badder all around. Louder, more aggressive.
Just depends on what you like.

Clutch and gearbox in 997 are completely different than 991.2
997 is very heavy with no assistance...you have a very unboosted feel which gives the feeling of the car being indestructible but also very demanding and hairy chested. Some people say it's a workout. The lightweight flywheel in a RS means you have to be pretty focused but are rewarded for your experience (literally having enough miles to appreciate the car)
991 feels much more modern and light, way less effort on both hand and foot. Gives the feeling of tireless to the driver, less work on the muscles But the dual mass flywheel does smooth out a lot of vibration and makes the car pretty livable at normal speeds.
It really depends on what you like but I would say the clutch pedal pressure on the R or the GT3 which is similar is now a lot closer to 911 Turbo or even lighter. The single mass in the R is a little different vs the GT3. The 997 and 991 GT3 share zero similarities other than having short distance throws.

Not about clutch and gearbox. About driving fun, feeling, peformance and bad *** factor?

I can make a comparison from the 997.2 RS and the 991.1 RS (and gt3 but I really didn't love that). The 997.2 RS is definitely a hairy, visceral and amazing piece of machinery that is definitely going to go down in history as one of the most focused, raw and overall "holy sh-T" porsche's of the 2000s. The 991.1 RS is interesting because while the 997.2 reminded me of a racecar, it didn't actually remind me of a cup car (which is kind of a nuanced thing I suppose)...but the 991.1rs legitimately brings my mind to a cup mindset. It's less effort, but the steering inputs and the balance of the car (not to mention the sound...ugh the sound) literally take me to that motorsports product mindset. I do have to say that the 997.2 steering was out of this world when it came to communication, and I do miss that, but I don't hate where the cars have gone recently, they are just different.

I kind of equate the 997.2 rs as a really tarted up grand am GS car in that it started life as as full production car and then gets a lot of pieces and weight reduction done to it. It's definitely got a "competitive" car feel but I would have NEVER compared it to a legitimate porsche cup, and it wasn't the gearbox that was the difference...it really was a feel thing. My 996 cup even had way more focus and pure purpose to it if that makes any sense. The 991.1 RS on the other hand REALLLLLLY gets rather close in the "feelings" department of a late gen 997.2 cup/991 cup. It's hard to explain but it's got this chassis focus and balance to it that, and I've never said this about another street car ever, completely makes me want to go back to racing. I know none of that is empirical...but I've been the same person who has felt that nothing could ever come close to the experience a real, factory built racecar provides for the longest time. The 991.1 RS just hit that point for me in a way I've not experienced in a road car (MAYBE 458 speciale aside...that thing is another example).

991 feels bigger and rides noticeably smoother than the 997. Steering feel and clutch effort of 991 are less direct and lighter than the 997. 991 feels more planted and relaxed at speed than the 997 which is more raw and a bit nervous by comparison. I can understand why someone would want to have an example of both generations in their collection because they deliver different driving experiences. The 997 is the perfect backroad car for a spirited Sunday morning drive whilst the 991 is the one to take on an extended drive. The 997 is a bit closer to the analog, mechanical feel of an older 911 and the 991 is more modern, refined and confident. Sort of how a 930 felt more visceral than a 928 back in the day.

Small trade off though for the improved drivability of the new car - ie. no more bone-jarring ride, leg-cramping clutch and budget car interior - which makes it a viable daily driver for guys like me who don’t have time to spend every weekend at the track. No doubt I will feel more confident driving the new car faster - more power, incredibly quick and precise steering, hard to unsettle over rough pavement, better brakes, etc. New car also sounds noticeably angrier/sportier at startup and full revs vs the tractor-like sound of the 997 at idle and lower revs.
If if I had to do it all over again, I would keep the 997 and spec the 991.2 with the PDK. A killer combination for all moods and purposes.
