I may give this a try. What's a good, robust, good bang/$, mid-level MTB for a beginner to get for easy trails, unpaved hard-packed dirt roads, and the occasional paved road section?

ChrisF, I spent a winter in Barcelona couple of years ago. Almost bought a place and didn't return. Still thinking we made a mistake. Never too late to correct it.

This thread is confusing ...

It's almost as if you guys don't care about the value of Porsches.

I have a YT Jeffsy 29, you order them online and start at $2,300 for Aluminum and $3,500 for CF... quite capable and much cheaper than the normal $5k+ Santa Cruzes or whatever you find in a bike shop. https://us.yt-industries.com/

ChisF, if you're still in Barcelona consider dining at Arume. Extraordinary cuisine and warm, friendly service. My family spent a week in BCN this spring and that was by far our favorite.

If still there try the oldest Catalan restaurant in Barcelona "Can Cullerettes".

Tues is a beast! DH stuff scares me I’ve only been biking for about two years so I keep to the saner stuff for now. Rockville is a great place to learn though.

Thx! The Alu Jeffsy are backlogged until Oct and $3.5k for the CF version is much more than I want to spend without getting some idea about how much I’m going to use it. Thoughts on the Chinese $1100 Carbon BEIOU on Amazon? *noob fire-suit on* Specs say they weigh only 22lb to the Jeffsy’s CF at 29lb and they seem to be using the same brand components (Shimano, etc.).

Btw why is CF Jeffsy only <1lb lighter than the Alu version? Seems the weight diff is not worth the price diff, unless there are some other benefits of CF over Alu.
