Race cars don't run rear wheel steering for a reason: it is specifically banned, has been for years. For example, see page 5 of the LeMans rule book:

If there's an actual problem or concern it would just be nice to have the facts, not wild speculation. This is the interweb, however.....

Pete's explanation at least makes sense.

Excuse me but I don't run at Le Mans and neither will the new GT3. I did not get a chance to read the full 27 pages of rules and regulations. That is my point. So far it is good enough for the street and a few laps on the track with journalists who don't wear helmets.

I'll be kind and say it's beyond a Carrera GTS, fairer to call it a Carrera RS, as has been suggested before. Then we'd know what it is and what it isn't (a GT3 in the spirit of its predecessors). Unfortunately, what I want is a new GT3. If they brought the 997.2 GT3 back at the same price as the 991 'GT3', I think I'd grab one.

Yes, but the car you mentioned, the RSR, does. It doesn't have RWS not because it's not faster or because it can't be made reliable, but simply because it's banned.

"Four wheel steering- Not permitted" middle of page 21.

There are good arguments why you might not want to have rear wheel steering on a car. "Because the race cars don't have it", "because it's slower" or "it can't be made reliable" are not some of them, IMHO.

Quite obviously this is not the car for that type of modification. The suspension, gearbox, brakes, differential, and steering front and rear are all computer controlled and designed to work together electronically. Obviously changing grip levels under all conditions by introducing a different type and/or size of tire will throw off algorithms. Not sure why anybody is surprised.

But this is the advanced technology we want! Because otherwise the internet says we have to go back to crank starting our wooden-wheeled cars with steering tillers...or taking the horse.

Suggested alternative for the disaffected. 200lbs lighter than the base 458 - 2844lb quoted dry weight - and no voided warranty if you stumble onto a track.

Gotta luv the exhaust flames at 2:25....

Not really.
In fact not even for the 996 GT3/2.

Then again, they weren't forbidden (or even mentioned) in the offical documents.

And it was easy to change out all the rubber suspension parts for spherical, plus at least prior to the massively track-unfriendly center-locks the 5-lugs had little trouble handling slicks and/or DOT track tires.

This is hilarious. I can envision this scenario.

A racer walks into a Porsche dealership and wants to buy a GT3 for the track.

Salesman asks do you want PDK or MT. Racer says MT because I want to go slower.

Salesman asks do you want RWS or nor. Racer says I do not want RWS because I want to go slower.

Salesman asks do you want the new DFI engine or the old Mezger engine. Racer says I want the Mezger engine because I want to go slower.

Salesman asks do you want MP2's or slicks and Racer says I want slicks because I want to go slower.

Salesman says I never heard of anyone buying a track car to go slower. What is the point of buying the GT3? Racer says I want my car to be a descendent of the GT3 Cup Car even if it means it will be slower.

Salesman vomits.

Bob's info are most often spot on. That's a proven fact.

It's kind of strange that Porsche would explicitly forbid slicks tires.

We always knew that a stock GT suspension isn't optimal for a full slick tire but, individual advice aside (for example Manthey himself), we never had a clear official disclaimer NOT to use slicks.

Maybe it's a sign of our times, maybe it's something more.

More, much more.

GTS for cruising for everything else we built cool stuff the last 50 years and we still offer CUP cars is the message.

You won't hear 458 Speciale guys complaining about no manual and standard carbon brakes
