I understand the R and the Spyder start off the same at 320 HP @ crank, which is 10 HP higher than the stock cars (Cayman And Boxster S)

Did this car also have the plenum and other mods prior to the Cobb Tune?

Default COBB Tune

The car has the following mods:

Fabspeed competition intake
82mm TB
IPD plenum
Fapspeed sport headers
Fabspeed maxflow exhaust
Light weight flywheel
Tarret controll arms
Tarret Swaybar
JRZ RS pro coilovers
GMG roll cage/ harness bar

The numbers are from the wheels

Wow, what a machine! Well done. Yes the numbers on the Dyno are at the wheels. Add 15% or so and the number compared to stock is likely 345-350 HP at the crank, compared to stock. Impressive

Thanks - I take this is the Cobb Tune that you did?

It is my impression that the Cayman R comes with 330bph from the research I have done before purchasing mine. Certainly didn't feel like it below 4500rpm before upgrading the headers and software haha.

That is a fantastic build! Thanks for posting up your data, and looking to seeing more in the future

Hi John - It's nice to see you already heading down the same path we've discussed for my car which is almost identical to yours (see pic). I love the sound of the race headers, but am hoping the addition of the 200 cell cats on the Sport Headers moderate that a bit.....we have a sound ordinance where I live

I'll continue to follow this thread with interest...

Yes the Sport Headers will certainly take the edge off the sound of the Race Headers and provide a throatier, more refined exhaust note. PM heading you way, would love to chat and catch up a bit

In factory form (Sport Mode on and PSE activated) the car felt rather lethargic and sluggish, slow to respond until about 4500 RPM where it started to pull. On top of that, the sound was never exciting to say the most. After the completion of Phase 1...the car pulls like a freight train from the moment you step on the gas and throughout the entire power band. The throttle response is crisp, unbelievable.

Valves closed, IMHO the car sounds just like factory. Valves open...it's hard to even put into words into how amazing it sounds. Sound level is up significantly but it isn't overbearing in any way. It is beautiful and throaty in the lower RPMS and approaching 4k it opens up into smooth, exotic wail that makes you catch your breathe and heart skip a beat. On deceleration (especially if you touch the gas a smidge) the overrun/burble is greatly accentuated and Intoxicating! The naturally aspirated version of turbo flutter haha.

I cannot fully express in words how much of a transformation this was to the car, it is 10x the driving experience and I am beyond thrilled. It is something you have to experience for yourself, so I extend an open invite for anyone to come on out/meet up to take it for a spin...you won't be disappointed

Here is an initial video from when I had our marketing team take the car out for a spin, and a teaser dyno graph of the HP gains. The TQ gains were even higher but the readout was a bit erratic so we will be dynoing the car again over the next week or two to get a clean torque graph.

Heading to Pocono this weekend for two days of AutoX on the infield road course and hours of beautiful backroad driving to and from our house at Lake Wallenpaupack. Bringing some GoPros

That's a serious power gain John! Can you clarify if this was with the preset Cobb tune or after the protune?

Also, what kind of sound change would you expect with catless race headers alone on a non-PSE boxster Spyder?

That sounds incredible! I'm pretty sure the sport headers are next on my list of mods. I just need to make sure I have a good place to smog my car and not get flagged.

This was after the protune, although our tuner mentioned the majority of the gains were from the headers themselves. However the improved throttle response and tweaks he made to the ECU file was worth its weight in gold in overall power delivery. He is unreal haha.

Still a very noticeable gain with a non-PSE exhaust The sound is going to be a bit more muted without as much overrun/burble as our Race Headers with PSE valves open, but it definitely gets a more more aggressive, higher overall pitch at full throttle and has near no drone with those factory mufflers still installed.

Here is a great reference video for you

Sounds phenomenal! I need to get some high speed flybys of my car now haha.

We have a special going on this month if you'd like to get started

Great speaking with you earlier, John!

Meant to ask but forgot, did you happen to weigh the factory headers vs. race headers during the install? Curious what the weight loss numbers are!

Great chatting with you too Max

No i didn't, wish I had! Next time I see a set of the race headers i'll get the weight, and I can scale my factory headers at home later on.

Just a little informational update for those interested!

Stock 987.2 manifolds with cats: ~25 lbs
Fabspeed Catless Race Headers: ~14 lbs
Weight Savings: ~11 lbs

For those doing the installation themselves, the work is very self explanatory and could theoretically be a ~2 hour job on jack stands in your garage, assuming you don't need to make multiple runs to the hardware store... Couple things to know:

1. The O2 sensors will have a very difficult time reaching the bungs. O2 sensor extenders (aka spark plug non-foulers) will help significantly, but the standard auto parts store non-fouler sizes (Doorman 42009) will not work due to the geometry of the O2 sensor and internal depth of the extender. I advise that you order a longer style online prior to attempting this installation. Use the straight through type, not the 90 degree type.
2. Non-foulers / extenders will NOT prevent a check engine light (due to "catalyst failure" from the post-cat O2 sensor). You will need a proper tune for that.
3. Fitment is great, but you may need to loosen a few of the mounting brackets on the stock mufflers in order to provide some relief when matching the manifold flange to the exhaust flange.
4. Mind the orientation of the gasket between the manifold flange and exhaust flange.
5. You will need to buy hardware for the connection between the manifold and exhaust flange, as the OEM manifolds are equipped with studs, whereas the fabspeed headers are not.

As for feedback:

I love the sound! I am running a standard, non-PSE factory exhaust with the headers. There is absolutely zero drone or indication of a change to the system during cruising. However, the howl when you really open it up is wonderful, and the tone is significantly changed from stock. It sounds very... racecar, without being loud and obnoxious. Volume increase is minimal at least from inside the car, although cold starts are definitely louder. The only time I've really been able to notice the volume increase was inside of a parking garage... and WOW does it sound mean! Throttle response feels noticeably better especially at low RPM's, and wide open the car certainly feels quicker. Whether or not this is in my head, I can't be sure, but the overall driving experience is enhanced regardless.

Now, time for a tune to get rid of the damn check engine light! With any luck, there will be even greater improvements to throttle response and power with the tune as well.

Cool, thanks for the feedback on that combo, specially the sound with the factory mufflers

Hi John,

Joe from NY here. Great thread and thanks for bringing ti to my attention! I had read it before, but forgot all about it. Just one quick question:

If I need to pass NY State emissions every year and not trigger noise limits at Lime Rock Park, what combination is possible and or recommended for the maximum "bang for the buck" if I am purely interested in power increases and not concerned about sound?

Thanks a bunch!

Joe
