Ah the Spyder really gives it up past 5500 RPMS
After getting some breakin miles under my belt I'm starting to flex the engine a bit and this Spyder really lives in the higher RPMS. The car sounds and feels marvelous when winding out the gears. I got a little aggressive with throttle balance on the up shifts and was rewarded with seemingly near pdk urgency.
As I mentioned, initially I was dissapointed with the long gearing. I was expecting to feel far more torque with the 3.8 vs the 3.4 in my 981S. However the long gearing especially in 1st and 2nd really mitigated the difference at least while keeping the RPMS under 5000.
To get the best out of the Spyder you really need to push the car and yourself as a driver, It needs to be driven without hesitation or reservation. Pussyfooting around might be ok for the turbo where even breathing on the acclerator can push you against your seat but the Spyder is no such beast. It's not that the Spyder is particularly unresponsive if you don't get on it , rather, it just isn't spectacular until you do. In an ever increasingly automated world the Spyder is all about the drivers input. It gives up the goods for those who are willing to go through the joyous effort of driving it passionately. And for some of us that's just as it should be.

I have 60 miles on mine and it's going in for a full paint correction and ppf in about a week.
I'll need to pull some all nighters to get those break in miles over and done with.

This is good to know.
Went on a drive today and at my current rate, my breakin period will end sometime around Feb. 2018.

Interesting, I feel just the opposite. I'm at 2000 miles approx, and revving past 5000 rpm really provides no advantage. You can tell the engine can't breath like it's supposed to, so revving higher is a pointless exercise. After adding the fabspeed sport headers there was a significant difference in midrange torque (let alone sound) but still nothing at higher rpm. I just ordered the tb and plenum hoping to let the car get more air at higher rpm to free up some power. The stock high rpm performance is sorely lacking, as is the steering feel.. Everything else is sublime IMO.

Alex, you are just feeling the building torque curve leveling off (as does the hp around 6500 rpm), but that does not mean max acceleration is achieved shifting it 5000 rpm. Far from it. I understand what you are saying, but in a max performance situation you still have to shift at a higher point, if only to keep the engine in the max torque band when revs drop in the next gear.
Interestingly, Porsche tuned the Spyder to get max hp a bit earlier than the GT4, so unfortunately that lack of desire to rev it out is probably worse in the Spyder.

If the GT4 has more top end power this will show on the track but the above review doesn't support that.
Not only that, he was able to pass other GT4s in GT4's natural habitant (in a Spyder with stock tires) ...this shows the Spyder can be a serious machine even stock if in the right hands.

I notice a substantial difference. That's what this car is all about. It's the point of having a high revving to 7800 RPM NA flat 6 as opposed to a turbo 4.
The only cars that are flat over 5k are turbo cars where you get all the torque early on or really big iron like you might find in a Vette
The fact that you can keep the revs up also helps so when you change gear you are still in the power band.
Btw Fabspeed. Great products. Great guys. I'm going to get their headers. Debating between the sport and the racing.

I found that the car feels like it wants to really live past 5000 but once there it was real quick to the limiter and the pull did seem to begin to start to plateau at 6000 - not flat, but not as explosive when it's 3500-5500 IMO. I need more time behind the wheel in a canyon setting which really hasn't happened much for me yet. I'm hoping to do the Ortega hwy to San Juan Capistrano in May.

The long gearing really kills the enjoyment of the car for me.
You have an engine that was designed to be high revving and comes alive after 5000rpm. But the gears makes it completely impractical for city roads.
I am already breaking the speed limit after I top out in 2nd gear. As I start to climb 3rd gear, I'm already at speeds that will get my car impounded for 7 days and a minimum $2000 speeding fine.
Makes absolutely no sense to have such long gearing.
Right now 2nd gear is about 125 km/h, I would love if the top of 3rd gear gets you in this speed range.
