Default Is the maintenance plan worth the money?

The dealer is saying that a 5 year, 50k mile plan that includes scheduled maintenance would cost me $4000. Seems kind of steep to me. From what I've seen, I would need oil changes at 10k, 30k and 50k, a minor service at 20k and a major at 40k. Am I missing something. Would all these things cost significantly more than $4000 to justify putting all this money up front?
I'm going to check with the service dept to see what things cost but I mainly wanted to make sure there wasn't some other service requirements I was missing.

I believe you can do everything yourself for this 5 year period for MUCH LESS. Of course it depends on how many miles you are going to put on the car. Oil changes, brakes, air filters, belt, fluids and spark plugs should be fairly DYIable with some mechanical aptitude and research. That is what I am banking on anyway. Also I would do oil changes on a 5,000 mile or less interval.

Oil Changes are about $320 at the dealer...on the high side. Brake Fluid $125 every couple of years. Filter, DIY or maybe $100 at dealer. Transmission fluid doesn't need to be changed. Not sure what plugs will cost but I doubt it's more than a few hundred.

Are you driving the car daily and do you anticipate putting that many miles on it?

Put the 4 grand in your sock drawer. Future seed money for the next Porsche toy.

Agree with Lex except instead of a sock drawer find a relatively safe investment spot and park it. Four grand goes a long way toward fixing most anything but catastrophic failure and you don't need to argue about whether to cover it when the day arrives either.

Thanks for the replies. I checked with the dealership and here's the info I got:

-Oil changes are $340
-20k service is $800
-40k service is $1300
-Brake flush is $215 (every 2 years)

There was something about the 20k and 40k services sometimes costing more, depending on miles driven. But, I didn't yet clarify what is meant by this.

The total for the 50k miles is $3550. I misspoke in my original post. The contract is priced at $2895 (I read it originally at $3895 and rounded up to $4000).
The savings is 18.4% over 5 years or $130 per year. Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to get excited about given that I'd be locked into taking my car to this dealership for five years. The sales experience has been good so far, but I don't know much about their service department.

As for DIY, I'm not inclined .

Oh, and yes, a daily driver. Historically I drive right about 10k per year.

The oil changes and brake flushes are so overpriced it's stupid, I put RBF 600 Motul in my brake system for around fifty dollars. Additionally I use Motul 8100 xcess which IMO is a phenomenal oil and it's cheaper than a visit to the dealer too.

Yeah, the service is expensive. But, if there's no competition, there's no reason to lower prices. Aside from other dealers, there really isn't any competition. And, I figure they're employing fairly skilled mechanics and paying them as such. Sure, I can go to a quick lube place and get a much cheaper oil change, but I'm sure the guys doing it aren't being paid nearly as much as porsche mechanics.

I knew what I was getting myself into when I ordered the car so I can't really get worked up about the service pricing. This is really just about whether it makes sense to put the money up front or not.

I'd be shocked if quick lube had Porsche filter cartridges. No matter, I don't want a bunch of ex cons stripping my drain plug or looking for the air filter that does not need service in the frunk. I don't even take my DD there. I'd like to agree with you on the Porsche service mechanics but I'm so crazy about the Spyder I don't even want them crawling into it all greasy. I've never even had it outside overnight! (yeah I'm that guy)

This gave me a chuckle. Lets just say that I'm happy with the middle ground between the ex-cons and doing it all myself
