997.1 Gt3 RS or 997.2 Gt3?

Hi,
After a season of track days, I am deciding whether to upgrade to one of the 2 cars above. Assuming they can be had for roughly equal money, which would you choose? I know that the later cars have PSM (which is useful on a wet trackday and a potential life saver), why would you swing one way or the other considering that the purchase will be made for track consideration only (with driving there being the road mileage as I don't intend to trailer the car). Thanks

You may be asking on the wrong forum.... ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
That's a tough choice, I must admit. RS is like a GT3 of GT3s, but .2 is the newer version with 3.8 L... hmm...
BTW, don't be discouraged by PSM. Yes, it can be intrusive on the track, but you can turn it off - though not completely - or you can get a custom kill switch to get rid of it altogether. However, it may be better than stuffing it into a tire wall...

sigh..... and i will be choosing one with no PCCBs. I knew you were going to say that.

seriously, i think the gen 2 is better looking as well but the gen 1 rs is rarer and has the RS badge. I was wondering what's the difference in handling and chasis balance.
Anyway, I posted here because i've always been a 987 fan and am still keeping one of the 2 cars...
so which one should I chop for the Gt3????

As you say, the .1 is rarer and has the badge... neither of which will help on the track! The suspension on the newer car is much better (so I've heard from those who have had both), and the added CCs. If it were for street, I would chose the .1RS, for track mainly, the .2 GT3.

I would buy based on the following:
1. Drive Both, Lean towards the one you prefer
2. Consider mileage and condition, choose the better condition car
3. Consider looks/options, choose the one you prefer
Either way they are both great cars but IMHO the options have a big impact on the overall car.
So the bigger question is which of the two 987's will you be selling/trading?

TBH... I was leaning towards the spyder........
I know it's a looker and is an occasion to be in. But, the CR is a better driving machine. In the end, i buy a porsche not to pose in but to drive.... it so happens that the spyder is equally good in both departments... just not as good to drive as the CR

I was GT3 shopping before I got the Spyder. May still replace it with one...
The early PASM on the 997.1 is considered by many to be quite poor, the nav system (if so equipped) was archaic when it was new, and IMO the standard colors are obnoxious.
The 997.2 cars have further developed PASM, improved interior materials, for me the nose-lift and sport bucket options are critical (I realize there is a Club Sport option overseas), and of course a bit more displacement. However, the center lock wheels are a huge negative for your (mine as well) purposes on track, both in terms of convenience and safety.

I have the .1 RS and have driven the .2 GT3. I don't think either car (or the .2 RS) is perfect or even close (the 4.0 on the other hand....).
I prefer the way the 3.6 runs versus the 3.8; the engine is just happier feeling. The .2 GT3 is probably more day-to-day liveable - better clearances, better suspension tuning, better torque off the line.
I'd take the .1 RS again (unless the .2 RS 4.0 was an option). It's more special. But I'm also unbothered with changing things Porsche's done, and all the 997s can be freely updated or or backdated.

BTW, keep the Spyder. Much rarer and special (IMO). If you do get a GT3, you'll have a coupe/track animal, so keep the Spyder for the street/some track. Why would you want 2 coupes? (when you can have one of each) Nah, I'm not biased at all...

When saying that you much rather care for the way cars drive instead of the 'bling' factor, you've just argued for the .2 GT3. BTW, Spyder was faster than R around a track........ at least in the hands of van Overbeek at a certain track....

Being in the UK I can totally understand why he would want two coupes.
khooni have you checked the alignment on the Spyder to make sure it is set correctly? I'm surprised to hear that the Cayman R is that much better to drive considering everyone else says they are very much the same.

I thought the general rule was to get the newest one you can afford?
Another option would be to turn either the Spyder or Cayman R into a dedicated track car. Operating costs would be a bit less than either GT3 and performance isn't that far off either.
