You're being too nice. It's an abomination.

Agree with Bill, at it's core 'rice' is poseur. Ricey people consider it a 'lifestyle'

Full disclosure: I used to be ricey myself back in college. My car was full of stickers and had a fart can and big wing. To partially defend it, I learned how to wrench on a car with my Mitsubishi Eclipse, and didn't 'sticker' anything that wasn't on the car. Nonetheless, flame away! My inner rice still shows it's head once in a while (red spyder emblem, red seat inserts, my Evo X). We all have our skeletons in our closet. Behold! My skeleton:

To add to it, I was also an Asian and had a fade.... wait....

+1 on that Ray.

Although imitation is flattery, I am NOT ok with this.

Keep it real man. There are tons of people around the world that it would be a lifelong dream to own a Boxster. Anyone who buys a Boxster, and then has a need to "pass it off" as a Spyder, has issues.

Joe,

After all these years, you only had to change one letter, you went from "ricer" to "racer".

Lol. I'm not really a 'racer', but an interesting observation, nonetheless.

The only great thing about it is that you could mod and experiment to your hearts content, and not worry about screwing it up... it's already so polluted. The only problem with a pristine Porsche, especially a rare model, is that you are always so afraid where you park it and what you can change on it. So what if it rains? Just put in water friendly seats, replace carpets with metal and drill holes in the floor to let the water run through!
That being said, I wouldn't buy it.

Hang on a second here guys. Not everyone can afford a Spyder and the looks of it are definitely a big part of its appeal. I think everyone on this forum believes their car is beautiful, right? What is wrong with this guy taking an older Boxster and turning it into what he feels, is one of the more beautiful versions of the Boxster? There is so much elitism with people on these boards. Why don't they just make only 1 color of the Boxster, with no options, that way EVERYONE can drive EXACTLY the same car and individuality can be COMPLETELY snuffed out. If you don't want the car, it's your right to NOT have to buy it. Maybe there's someone out there who has dreamed of owning a Spyder but can't afford it. Live and let live, people.

I tend to agree with what your saying.

If anything the term "copying is the sincerest form of flattery" applies here.

If you look back in history, the cars that have become collectable were and are the ones that people and aftermarket companies have tried to copy. That bodes well for the Spyder.

This examples seems to be one of the better "spyder" executions that I've seen.

Well, for me, I wasn't frowning on the car. The car is clean, shows lots of passion. I was dissing on the "RS" moniker. Back when I was more "rice'd", I had an Integra GSR. Nobody would dare putting a Type R sticker on their cars. When I got a little bit more mature, I graduated to BMW's. And same thing, if it is not a M3, no M3 badging, unless you have the ricer mentality of for bragging rights. Then I graduated to Porsche, different stories, I see all kinds of creative naming, Cayman RS (active thread), Cayman GT, Cayman GTR, RSR, GTRSR R spec, Type V, etc etc etc. I didn't think it was cool. But it seems widely accpeted, so what do I know. I am just a newbie.

MMMMmmm... No. I still think it's an abomination.

Yes, everyone is free to do whatever they want. Men can dress in women's clothing and wear high heeled shoes to express their 'individuality.' Go for it. It doesn't mean I have to enjoy looking at it for fear of being elitist. Am I Right? It's got nothing to do with elitism. It has everything to do with looking 'not right'.

Besides, the owner couldn't have liked the car THAT much. He's selling it, right?? Maybe he realized it was an abomination.

I agree with Joe, though personally I wouldn't call it quite "abomination". The owner did whatever the heck he wanted to his 986. That is within his rights. But we also have every right to express our opinion, in this case predominantly negative. It's not elitism; it's just stating what WE think about his creation.

My problem with the car is that the owner wanted to turn it into what it is NOT. It is clearly not a Boxster Spyder, let alone a Boxster Spyder "RS". It's trying to turn it into what it's not that make us sniff the "wanna-be" aspect. And we're talking about Porsches, for crying out loud.... if you can't afford a Spyder, then don't "pose" as if it is one. It is tacky.

I would have the same issue if someone turned a 911 C2S into a "GT3 RSR" after putting a big wing and some aero on it.

The amount of money dumped into that car will put it a stones throw away from the cost of a spyder.

I agree everyone has the right to NOT like the car. Of course. But calling it an abomination is different than not liking it. Look, if a guy takes an MR2 and makes it into a Ferrari or Lambo, that is the ultimate rice hack, obviously. But this guy didn't take a Ford Escort and turn it into a Bugatti wannabe. People have been taking old Mustangs for years and throwing GT headlights, stickers, well, making them a complete GT clones. And people love them. Hell, I love them...even if someone can walk up and say, "this isn't a TRUE GT" So what. I highly doubt that his old 986 plus the bodywork comes close to the price of the real car. As long as he's not representing it as a TRUE RS Spyder when he's selling it, who cares? It's still a Porsche, and in my opinion was done pretty well.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one (and that's OK! ). I'd definitely have a problem with wanna-be Mustang GT's if I owned a GT myself. That would NOT be cool. In fact, I saw one when I was younger... you don't wanna know what I thought inside.
