Default 2009 Engine Reliability

I realize that the '09s don't have lots of miles on them yet, but was curious what the current consensus is on their reliability. I have been thinking of getting a Boxster and had mostly been looking at '00-'03 986's, which all have had quite a few growing pains. Wondering what the news is so far on the non-IMS design, either base or S model

Thanks

Len

I have an '07 and it has been without any problems. In addition I haven't had any problems with squeaks or rattles, a rarity in roadsters. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a 987 to anyone, assuming that the previous owner didn't abuse or neglect the car.

I have a 2009 Boxster and love it. Has 14,000 miles on it now. Bought it CPO at 7500 in March 2011. Car has been great so far. Engine is strong and very good on fuel. Mine is a PDK too. Believe it or not it is a great car. Only been to dealer once for an oil change/annual service. The 2009 is direct injected.

I have a 2012 Boxster S Black Edition with only 1000 miles and am already having a problem with hesitation and drop in power at a certain RPM in 3rd gear.

I would advise that you test-drive any car before buying and make sure to accelerate in every gear.

Just for clarity, only the base cayman/boxster are not direct injected 09-12. Only the S and up... But, the 09 onward base cayman/boxster share the improve engine architecture and oiling. There are occasional water pump issues and now I heard of injectors, but I haven't seen any "deep" issue with the 09+ engines, in any 987 or 997. Let's hope it stays that way.

Water pump is definitely an issue that seems to be a common with 987's regardless of year.

I have an '09 base Boxster. It only has 8,400 miles, but so far no problems. It went through nearly 3 quarts of oil the first year or so --- but I've since discovered that is not unusual. After the oil change at 5K, it has barely used any oil at all. Also normal.

When I was considering the purchase nearly two years ago, I asked their Porsche tech about the IMS issue and he was quite upfront, explaining that and the oil seal redesign was very significant and in fact, he showed me an earlier set and compared it with the new versions. Quite different, indeed.

Also - mine is an "almost" DD in the months April through November, driving style is mostly conservative, but with those special redline moments on occasion . She sleeps under cover in the winter.

Hope that helps.

My 09 2.9 have 33,000 miles no problems with the engine.. i had issues with the shift cable, I know its a known issue with previous 987 but also dueto the fact that my car was a previous service loaner and people just dont know how to drive..lol
but i love it i get 32mpg...

The only issue with my '12 Spyder is that it might be too awesome.
